  • The official HARRY POTTER thread

I'll be (hopefully) seeing it tonight. I've only read 10 pages of the first book and seen the 3rd movie and parts of the 4th, but I won't miss the opportunity to see it with a bunch of nerds.

I've heard some hilarious spectator-related stories. One of my twitter friends said a guy proposed to his girlfriend in the theater. there have been reports of theatres booing the "new moon" preview.

Hopefully we'll see a Triumph the Insult Comic Dog appearance at a Harry Potter premier much like we did wit Star Wars.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

My daughters are going tonight. The wanted to go last night, but waited to long to get tickets. I'll probably wait for a couple of weeks until the excitement has died down.

I may be small, but I'm slow.

I have a 14 year old daughter that went to the midnight showing. She reported that it was very good, but since it was 3:00 in the morning and I was pretty groggy, I don't have much more info than that.

Can someone please clarify for me......is this the movie that ends with the snake coming out of the toilet to destroy the world or the one where someone gives the little goblin a pair of used socks?

these books are all so awesome that I sometimes confuse them.

The two particular instances that you are recalling are actually from the same book: The Chamber of Secrets.

I for one, would love to see this movie, it looks like a ton of fun, hopefully Surfah will take me for my birthday this weekend!

You know how President Hinckley said he doesn't worry about those who pray? The same can be said for men who are self-aware enough to know when there's a life to be lived outside of the world of video games. - Anonymous

                  my bad. thanks for clarifying.

is the chamber of secrets the one where the guy turns into a dog so he can fight the werewolf (rather than just throwing one of those screaming potted plants at the werewolf? or parking the flying car on the werewolf? or having the large gay bearded guy befriend the werewolf?)

It is funny to see DDD so bitter about Harry Potter, is it just misplaced Lamar Odom hate or have you always been this way?

I enjoyed the Harry Potter books as something to read every couple of summers, despite the fact I grew to loathe J.K. Rowling who seems to think she saved reading and literature with her story. Then when the final book came out and it proved her to be a complete liar with her years of "I have had the ending written since I started the story" bull crap. It took HP from something I enjoyed to something I thought was really stupid.

I can't get over the fact that this self important author, took the crap way out and made an ending to her series that made no sense. I would assume to keep the door open for another series with the same characters at some point in the future.

I read the first book and half of the second book. I think they are insufferable. Faith and Little Robin love them. Little Robin, who is ten, has read the entire series (and the entire Eragorn series, which is even worse). The boy loves to read crap, but I'm happy he loves to read. I need to pick up a copy of The Hobbit, so he can understand what a good example of fantasy lit can look like. It is kind of depressing that an entire generation (or two) of children are growing up with Harry Potter as the foundation of their understanding of literature. We need more Roald Dahls fewer J.K. Rowlings.

                        Amen and hosanna.

I read the first book and saw the first movie. I remember going to see it in Las Vegas over Thanksgiving weekend (I think). Everyone loved the movie, I thought it was boring. I thought the first book was an average children's book. The books quickly became a sales juggernaut, but I had no interest in reading the second one. In fact, I never read another one.

When the second movie came out, I decided to give it another chance. Horrible. It was a terrible story, terrible acting....the special effects were fun, as far as kiddie movies go.

The third movie came out on DVD when my wife was in the hospital with our triplets. We had nothing else to do every single night for months, so she watched some movies on a weekly basis. One night we rented the werewolf movie. It was so awful that she asked me to turn it off mid-way through.....a pregnant woman on bedrest who cant even roll over on her side would rather watch nothing than watch the movie. I finished watching it the next day when she was taking a nap. Big mistake.

Neither of us have ever watched another HP movie after that.

Triplet, you are a butt. I really like you, but you are

I have just started reading the 3rd book. So I don't know anything about werewolves yet. I have seen all the movies at one time or another (though I don't remember the content very well) so I just decided to read the books finally. I am in a hermit/anti-social phase right now where I just want to be alone and read, so Harry Potter seemed enough to fill the next 10 days or so.

This is a fair argument. I have read The Hobbit and the LOTR series, and they are more than great. But don't you think it is obvious that both of the series are not meant for the same audience? I think it obvious that HP is more of a children's thing. And take it easy on your boy I love Tolkien, but I can understand if he finds more interest in "crap" right now than 9 whole pages describing a tree. And Roald Dahl is awesome.

I will always have fond memories of the books.
About an hour before bedtime, we would all gather on our bed (me, wife, daughter and two cats will comfortably fit on a king bed) and I would read the books out loud.
On the whole, the books were good, not great, but the time together is what I will always remember.

Movie, we'll probably see it for family night on Monday. I don't want to be in a crowded theater with a bunch of costumed weirdos waving their wands about. I fully expect the continuation of poor acting. Ron Weasley being the worst, although I hear he did a fine job in Thunderpants.
                              Maybe they'll surprise.
                              I intend to live forever.
                              So far, so good.
