What's the first pop song / hit you remember?

I remember hearing Abra Cadabra from the Steve Miller Band on the radio. This was his only big song in the early 80s. I was probably around 4-5 years old. I then remember Puttin on the Ritz from some singer named Taco. But the first stuff I really remember is from around 1983 when Beat It and Billie Jean were always on Solid Gold. Later that year and into 1984, it was impossible to miss the Thriller video.

Given the fact that my parents had control over the car radio, I also have a ton of memories of crap from Christopher Cross and Air Supply.

Here is the honest truth: THe first one I recall is "Do the Twist" by Chubby Checkers. I used to perform the dance to great acclaim from family memebrs when I was a wee lad of 4 or 5 or maybe three, somethign like that.

I was pretty young, but I bought my dad this cd for Christmas.



I'm pretty sure he wasn't a Hammer fan, but I was. My mother later made me return it. Something about inappropriate lyrics.

My parents didn't appreciate HammerTime, either.

My brother's initials were(are) MC, and he just thought he was about the coolest thing ever.

[New Mexican Disaster]

I started listening to America Top 40 Casey Kasem late 1981/early 1982. The combination of the stats/numbers stuff and the coming of age listening to my own music instead of mom and dad's was pretty thrilling to the young Jay Santos.

I remember hearing the 1981 year end show with Kim Carnes Bette Davis Eyes as #1. I also remember the stunning change at the top of the charts around Feb 1982. Joan Jett I Love Rock n Roll had been #1 for 6-8 weeks in a row, with Journey Open Arms #2 for a few weeks in a row and J Geils Centerfold #3. Unexpectedly when I Love Rock n Roll was finally unseated it was Centerfold vaulting to #1 with Open Arms staying at #2 for a few more weeks before falling.

I googled to see if my memory was right and from what I could gather, it is.

Journey Escape was the first album I bought with my own money.

You mean I was not the only one who would sit down and track all of the movements of the Top 40? I could have cared less about the music, I was there for the statistics. I would salivate for the year end Top 100 and Top 40 radio shows that would come on.

My first song was "Another Brick in the Wall." It blew my 3 year old mind wondering why someone would question an authority figure. That is why I remember it.

My mom loves to remind us all that she was in her college years when Beatlemania hit the US shores. She was old enough to see them at the Hollywood Bowl.

We often tease her about her age, but when you come across someone that appreciated the Beatles when they were actually happening, there is no teasing. Only reverence and jealousy.

I mean this in all seriousness, but I wish guys like creek and PAC (who are a little more 'experienced' then the rest of us) would regale us with tales of the evolution of music in their youth...some of the bands that are now revered as classic rock....what was it like when they first heard them.....how did it change or shape popular culture?.....how did the kids react to it?....how did the parents react to it? To me, that is the stuff of legend.

It was transcedent; nothing else mattered. ANd the first Led Zeppelin Album? WOw. SItting in my room listneing over and over. ANyway, those are stories for another day.
