  • Accept No Substitutes

I just bought a package of generic fig newtons and they were horrid. I made a mental note to never buy generic newtons, only Nabisco from now on. That got me thinking about product categories where the market leader is so superior to anything else, that buying an off brand or generic just incurs great misery. So list your preferences now: What products will you accept no substitutes for, from cars to hand tools to food.

Here's the start of my list:

    Fig Newtons
    Best Foods Real Mayonaise
    Kraft Mac N Cheese
Real Butter (except when making Mac N Cheese or Banana bread)
Nestles Semi Sweet chocolate chips (when making toll house cookies)

Honey Nut Cheerios (almost all brands of generic cereal are a no-go)
Most Campbell Soups (per my spouse almost all generic soups are a no-go)
Most salad dressings (the generic substitutes are usually very sub par)
agree with Kraft Mac N Cheese (per my kids, I haven't been able to eat it post mission and college - reached my lifetime quota)
also agree with Cookie baking supplies (butter Crisco and name brand chocolate chips)

I agree with the above lists. My immediate thought was store brand saltines are not worth the price savings.

On the other hand, I prefer Big K diet soda over Diet Pepsi and Diet Coke. The Alberstons, and Safeway equivalents are acceptable. There is only one Diet Dr. Pepper though.

Wow, you guys eat a lot of crap.

How about beef, ham, bacon bits, vanilla and as mentioned above butter.

I will accept shortening in place of lard. I will eat Velveeta in certain products. I also do not insist on real maple syrup.

One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

Wegman's private label Oreo-like cookie is exactly like an Oreo. No lie. I remember tasting one thinking it'd be like a Hydrox but I couldn't tell it wasn't an Oreo.
