I'm one of the ones who really likes it, although some of the lesbian sex scenes are really shocking, as well as the cussing (mostly F bombs, but also the C word). I could really use less of the sexual scenes. Some thoughts:
The series is really misogynistic. Why do they show female sex scenes up close and in loud moaning detail, and yet for male-female sex the camera always cuts away?
I like the hair style details. The highlights in Piper's hair (and Dara's hair) slowly grow out and their roots get longer every week. It always bugs me in other shows (The Walking Dead) when the women with bleached hair keep their bleached tresses the same every week when they havent been to the hairdresser in months.
That little snippet of a scene with counselor Sam Heally showing his mail order bride from Ukraine speaking to her mother in Russian at the table, discussing how long she has before she gets her green card and can then divorce him was spectacular, giving us terrific insight into his character
Spoiler for spoiler :
even before he throws Piper's ass into the SHU
.
Taryn Manning (Pennsatucky) is a fabulous actress. I've never seen her before, but judging from her current resume, everyone wants her in their movie: Hawaii Five-O, Sons of Anarchy, Drive. She does a great job of playing pathetic and malicious at the same time.
Spoiler for Spoiler re: Pennsatucky:
Her contract's been renewed for season 2, so she must survive the season ending prison brawl
.
The tranny character is played by tranny actress Laverne Cox, who is quite pretty with hands like an NBA stars.
The lead character really reminds me of a plainer Ally McBeal, and the show sometimes resembles Ally McBeal, as it carooms from shocking to semi funny to scary.
Pornstache is played by Pablo Scheider, half brother to Liev Scheider. I loved him as the native-american shaman in A Gifted Man (such a great series cancelled after one season by CBS), and like Manning, he does a great job of portraying a guard who is buffoonish and malevolent at the same time.
Pornstache is one of the worst parts of the show for me. He's one of the characters that I think really throws the tonality off. He's too much camp for a show also trying to carry a drama angle.
And I can't believe Katy hasn't seen 8-Mile!
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.
I had no idea this was based on a book which is based on a true stroy. In fact the books author is actually named Piper and reading the Amazon reviews her fiance Larry really did have an article posted in the New York Times.
I am not sure if this makes me like it more or less.

Yeah, he was in publishing or something (maybe just a writer) and convinced her to the write the book. They stayed together after she got out of jail and are still together.

agreed. on both accounts

Exactly. I can't decide if this is supposed to be a drama that lacks well drama or a comedy that lacks laughs.
That's kind of how I felt about Weeds, except that it had enough of both that I liked it quite a bit before it jumped the shark after the 2nd or 3rd season (Whenever it was that Agrestic burned down). Even then, it was sometimes a confusing show to watch; Dramedy seems difficult.
There's something about Laura Prepon that's just kind of freaky looking in this show. Surgeries? The eyebrows? IDK, she kind of has this Joker-ish look to her right now.

This. I'm 5 eps in and I dread every appearance of his. That said, he'll always be my Nicky Sobotka.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock
I gave it a shot, but I couldn't even get through the first two episodes (which, based on the previous comments in this thread, I was expecting a guy to be able to get through). It didn't draw me at all.

Agreed; it's something around the eye area that's different. Also, the last time I saw Natasha Lyonne was when a college roomie brought home But I'm a Cheerleader on DVD. I hardly recognized her in this show.

I got through 5 episodes. I fell asleep during the 6th. I am still stumped by the overwhelmingly positive reviews this show has received. As far as Netflix shows, House of Cards was 10x better IMO. I did just realize that Red was that commander chick from Star Trek. I am sure one of you nerds know what I am talking about.
