The most interesting thing about it to me is that it's the woman that is more stridently pro-USSR even if it's potentially to the detriment of the kids. But it becomes apparent by the end of the episode that the woman has indeed ended up either becoming attached to or even in love with the man that she was paired up with to become a couple in a sleeper cell. Conversely the man is the softie, is becoming attracted to the American way of life, and he doesn't want to kill the former KGB colonel in the trunk. Once he finds out what the colonel did to his partner/fake wife in the past he then takes care of business.
I think that the show has a lot of territory to cover in the form of flashbacks. It was apparent that Keri Russel's character wasn't ready to engage in the sexual side of things because of what had the KGB colonel had done. The man probably has been repeatedly tempted to defect but the love of his partner/wife makes him stay the course. Keri Russel's strict duty is to report her partner/husband's behavior and inclinations to her superiors but she doesn't do it because of her feelings.Part of it is based on academic grounds.
