The Last Jedi is the best SW movie and it's not even close. Come at me.
I came to peace with the sequel trilogy a long time ago, by acknowledging that Episodes IV through VI were Good Star Wars, Episodes I through III were Less Good Star Wars, and the Disney sequel was fan fiction.τὸν ἥλιον ἀνατέλλοντα πλείονες ἢ δυόμενον προσκυνοῦσιν

The Force Awakens was cool, but TLJ actually takes the characters and SW somewhere. They could have ended the trilogy w TLJ and it would have been perfectly poetic.Originally posted by Moliere View Post

This is the correct take.
The characters in the sequels are poorly developed and uninteresting. The point will come when they are certainly retconned.

I saw ROTJ twice in the theatre when I was 5- once by myself while the rest of my family watched some other movie. I was in love w SW and even sent away to be part of the Star Wars Fan Club thinking I was going to get in trouble because there was a note that it was for ages 6+.Originally posted by All-American View Post

But you are, with all due respect, high as Snoop if you don't think the best Star Wars is the Star Wars that has been produced in the last 7 years. You're right. But had that been the ending to the series or if they hadn't made a third, the ending to TLJ would have been perfectly appropriate.Originally posted by Moliere View Post

Smoking? Nothing, but I do watch Star Wars. Have you seen the original trilogy lately? It's pretty good, but man does it have problems. It helps when you remember that it's principally a kid's movie and a very strong cinematic homage.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

The sequel trilogy + the Clone Wars + Rebels + Rogue One +Solo+ the Bad Batch + the Mandalorian + the Book of Boba Fett + the SW Marvel Comics + Jedi: Fallen Order are amazing and are just the tip of the iceberg of where SW is going and how far reaching the stories will be. . I imagine most people reading this haven't watched them. People crack me up who praise something like the Mandalorian but hate something else from this era of SW like it's not 'real' star wars, even though it's all from the same story team, writers, creative directors, and producers. The sequels are not getting 'retconned' any more than the Mandalorian is getting retconned. Sorry.
Most SW movies are popcorn flix and that's fine. TLJ was like SW except with exquisite cinematography, character development, dialogue, and mildly subversive with theming about fallibility, renewal, redemption, the existence of a good vs. evil dichotomy, and truth over dogma. It is a very heavy movie and I acknowledge that. It also has the best fight in SW if you like that sort of thing. People complain about the way it 'treated' Luke Skywalker, but they should have been honored that the movie respected the audience enough to not insert the facile light saber deus ex machina a certain portion of the audience seemed to expect. Luke is a hero in true Jedi fashion without betraying his character's journey or the movie itself. Rian Johnson really is a savant. Somebody said the difference between Rian Johnson and JJ Abrams is that JJ is a fan of SW movies and Rian is a fan of Star Wars. Rise of Skywalker did none of that, but I didn't hate it because to me SW is like pizza... even when it's bad it's still pretty good. And there were really really good moments in the movie, despite the ill-conceived Palpatine premise. I would welcome a Rey/Finn Disney + series to continue their stories.

Oh good heavens. No. TLJ is not a good movie, that fight scene was not a good fight. These are not good takes.Originally posted by Commando View Post

I love almost all of the post prequel Star Wars content, with the exception of VIII and IX (and I would put TFA at the bottom of the rest, even though I enjoyed it). I love the Clone Wars, the Bad Batch, and the Mandalorian. I liked Rebels. Rogue One was great. I even thought Solo was fine.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, but the sequels just aren't good movies. I don't think the prequels were great but the storyline was coherent and consistent. The novelizations of the movies, or a Wikipedia summary, make sense in the overall universe. Not the case with VIII and IX. They clearly didn't have a clear plan with the trilogy and were making it up as they went along. And it shows. Rey is boring. Kylo is too emo to be believable as a threat. Finn wasn't developed, "somehow, Palpatine returned," ect, etc ,etc.
Lucasfilm would be committing suicide if they were to continue to bound themselves by something that was pieced together ad hoc.

Have you read Colin Trevorrow's 'Dual of the Fates' script? It had some things that I liked and showed promise-- they use Plagueis' ancient master instead of Palpatine as a transformative character for Kylo Ren and utilize the Knights of Ren a bit more, but ultimately JJ's take was better overall, even though I was very let down by their use of Palpatine. I don't even hate that Palpatine was in it-- just the way they did it was awful. Return of Skywalker has Ben Solo, though, and that was the much better resolution for that character, as much as a redemption was not really in the cards for him. They took some giant steps in rehabilitating Kylo Ren in the comics, though, in showing what really happened w the Jedi academy, etc.Originally posted by USUC View Post
