I liked 7, but the real sin of the Star Wars series is that these dumb MFers keep building planet/star destroyers with fatal design flaws. Dumbass sith.

I mean, if you watch episodes 4 through 6 and see "Masterpieces," there something wrong with you. The acting was marginal, the stories so/so, but the effects, costumes, etc. were probably ahead of their time. If you can sit down and enjoy a couple of hours watching a movie, with a popcorn, a soda, and a spouse who is way too attractive to be with you, it doesn't get much better than that.

    • Yeah I think there's too much nostalgia tied to these movies for some of these people to be truly happy with anything that comes out. That was the real problem w TLJ for some people-- it was too much change and threw a lot of cold water on their nostalgia for the sake of world building.

That's why the Mandalorian is such a crowd pleaser-- not because the writing, acting, directing is just a seismic change from the sequels (which Adam Driver- holy cow-- best acting in any SW movie ever. By far.)-- but because it uses zero characters from the other movies (it has only uttered the word 'Jedi' once in 8 episodes for Pete's sake) and therefore does not interrupt anybody's nostalgia boner. I think this theory is confirmed by all the non-SW fans who had none of the same problems w the sequels that some of the 'fans' did and sincerely wonder what all the fuss is about (See JL's TLJ review).

I don't think the Rogue One series is going to have any problems with those fans, either, but I would watch out for the Obi Wan series. Of course, Ewan McGregor seems to be pretty immune from the prequel criticisms (pretty rightly so- he's awesome), so maybe not. I think this last installment opened the doors wide open for some good Disney+ series about Palpatine, the Knights of Ren, etc., so I think the sky is the limit for SW with Disney like it never was with good ol' stubborn George Lucas by himself. I'll be excited to watch the next trilogy (supposedly the Knights of the Old Republic era SW-- 1,000 years before the events of episode I) because I like movies and I like SW.

I sort of enjoyed the fact that JJ included the can't-shoot-for-shit storm troopers in this film. They must assign only those guys to defend the destroyers.

        • The first part of the Mandalorian S8 where the storm troopers were shooting the breeze with baby yoda in the bag was really fun. I hope Taika Waititi gets to direct more episodes.

YES! Those guys are terrible. But as it turns out, maybe they shoot for shit because they are all a bunch of subversives who wish they could escape the empire/first order.

They punching of Baby Yoda in the bag was hilarious. I was laughing pretty hard. Playing on the "stormtroopers can't hit shit" history was pure genius.

Absolutely. He's one of the brightest lights in the series, and certainly the best actor. Season 2 should be fun.

Really? I cringed. But I missed the irony(?)/subtext.

What did you cringe about? Maybe there wasn't a reconciliatory subtext to the thing you didn't like...

Don't forget the fact that the music is well above average as well.

Some would argue (including a lot of the filmmakers themselves) that John Williams made Star Wars a success. Can you imagine watching that without the gravitas of that score?

Just to emphasize this point, which is 100 percent correct. Here is the final scene of Star Wars without the gravitas of that score.

EDIT: And here is the opening scene, again without the score.
