  • My daughter wanted to see Barbie, so I went with her Friday night. It's not one I would go to on my own, but it was fun. There were a huge number of people in pink dresses all over the theater., and very much a buzz and party atmosphere.

There were a couple of scenes that I don't think will age well, not in the sense that they are wrong, but that they are SO much a reflection of this moment in time. I think 10 years from now they will really stand out as kind of jarring, and people will be like "Oh, yeah, remember the early 2020s?"

Having said that, as a father of three daughters I always appreciate girl-power messages, and while the movie seemed a bit disjointed at times, it had a lot of fun moments, and it interspersed some silliness with a couple of scenes that were genuinely moving (as well as a couple that kind of clunked).

The cast was generally very good, with the exception IMO being Kate McKinnon. Her character was a funny concept but she never really hit it for me. Also, if you want to see Michael Cera in a fight scene beating a bunch of guys up, here is your chance! (unsurprisingly, he was not extremely believable in that scene).

    • I went to see Barbie as well. I’m not going to offer any disclaimer. I knows a lot of people here have said they will never see it. I’ll tell you it is a lot funnier than those Geico commercials about turning into your parents.

It was a party atmosphere in the theater. Lots of laughing at the funny parts. Definitely need to be in the right mood for the film.

Way too many references to patriarchy so the anti-woke crowd isn’t going to love it. But overall a movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It was done about as well as such a film could be.

Geico commercials last 30 seconds. I would see the Barbie movie if it only lasted 30 seconds and I didn't have to get off my couch to see it.

        • Oppenheimer was awesome. Great performances, great pacing, underwhelming nudity.

Definitely not your typical Nolan film, but agree it was a great film. Murphy is a great actor. Downey Jr. had a ton of screen time and did really well also.

Strong disagree on the nudity judgement though!

            • Can't wait to see Oppenheimer. The debates on twitter about WW2 history are interesting. So many people weighing in without a clue. Yeesh.

              • Saw Oppenheimer last night. Great flick. Its long, but didn't drag. Murphy was excellent.

                • Oh, and given the choice, I would recommend seeing Oppenheimer in the theater, rather than waiting until it comes out on streaming. Big screen and big speakers add a lot to the experience.

Haven't watched any Peaky Blinders, but now I think I'll give it a chance.

                      • I give Oppenheimer a 7/10. The portion leading up to building the bomb was really great. The hour after that was poor. Nolan didn't do enough to make me care whether or not Oppenheimer would go down politically to endure the third hour of a movie that had already reached its climax.

Peaky Blinders was awesome, largely because of Murphy.

Yep. Murphy is intense throughout the series, just like in Oppenheimer. But it's also a great period piece. Great costumes and some decent British history intertwined in the plot. The first two seasons are excellent. Like all series it loses gas in the last couple of seasons but I still enjoyed it through.
