Oh geez, you and Triples are kiling me! She's the shits and redundant (I swear she does the same damn thing on 90% of the songs) -- I just really like Jack and really don't care for her, which is weird when they're playing in the same band. Certainly he could have played with someone that could serve the same purpose (fill space) and been a lot more interesting about it. Not that there's anything wrong with your opinion.

White Stripes could be considered avant-guarde simply because you don't see two person rock bands very much. The lineup, or lack of it, leads to interesting arrangements and explorations into technology.
There are a pile of two-person bands, and not just those that have happened after the White Stripes. I mean, they formed as a two-person outfit because of another two-person band that Jack loved. I don't think that makes them terribly unique.

Also, explorations into technology? Jack? He's like the anti-tech guy. Wasn't his whole purpose in the It Might Get Loud doc to serve as the counter-point to a total tech head like The Edge? He even talks all about how he thinks technology limits creativity. Everything he does -- from guitar approach to recording -- seems to be aimed at doing things in a more retro fashion.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

You read me. Also, it's been well-documented that Jack purposely uses a crappy guitar and places the piano a little too far away from the microphone stand to force extra mojo into each performance- that he has to beat the music into submission. His approach is bat-shit crazy from a musical point of view where practice, performance, and control is king, but perfect from an artistic point of view where extemporaneous transcendent moments are gold.

Further, Jack purposely put the Stripes into voluntarily committed confinements. Only wearing Red and White, so that the artistry would be forced to escape through the music (like a blind man whose hearing becomes exquisite). Only writing in certain keys using a limited number of chords or no minor chords... etc. He's even gone so far as to hire studio musicians on more recent projects and contracted them for a limited amount of time without having first written a song- and ended up recording songs for release on a major label in that hour or whatever. All these things are not normal, but completely worked, so props to Jack White for being a genius.

I've always liked the guitar work in this one.

Absolutely love that song -- Jack kills on it.

This supports my point, though. You are not a fan of Meg because of her allegedly lousy drumming yet you love 7NA. That is what I was saying....even while stipulating that she is a poor drummer, the drumming on that song is fantastic in its simplicity. Nobody listens to that song and feels like the song is lacking due to subpar drumming. Everyone is too busy bouncing their head to the beat.

People like to cut her down, but for such an allegedly lousy drummer, they both somehow managed to make a lot of really good music.

I will leave you with some Hotel Yorba. Please listen to this entire song without bobbing your head or moving to the beat in any way. IMPOSSIBLE!

I do love a lot of their songs, but there are many, even those that I like, where I find her distracting and would potentially like them even more without her. It's always Jack that makes those songs for me -- I've always said that he could have been part of one of my favorite bands ever if he played with other musicians. As it stands, I've always been relatively luke-warm on The White Stripes, generally speaking.

But I can see right through you and Shaka and know what this is really about...you just like her boobs!

It's a guitar riff, with an octave pedal.

One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

                    She's a pretty miserable drummer...not sure she even has three-way independence...i bet she doesn't...

But in a cool way, it somehow enhances the music...her imprecise timing and general lack of skill make it feel like the train could come of the rails at any time yet JW holds it all together.

For the record, seven nation army is one of my least favorite of their repertoire.

I think the Switch and the Spur from the Raconteurs has one of my favorite guitar solos of all time and a bad ass bridge

I didn't call her a prodigy. I said what she does fits the music.

This comes from the fact that I'm not only a guitar player but a total gearhead. Jack will use virtually any effect: digital, analogue, meant for guitar, not meant for guitar, etc.... to achieve his style. He uses a ton of technology both old and new.

An excellent piece, carefully crafted, yet delicately frazzles.
