  • I know I'm supposed to love Smartless, but I honestly don't. I listened for a few weeks, and then moved on. Couldn't quite pinpoint why I didn't love it. I love all three of the hosts. But it didn't work for me, for whatever reason.

I'm moving rapidly in your direction for reasons stated in my previous post. They are much better suited to just shoot the shit together and drop the pretense of an interview.

I find PNW-based "Too Beautiful To Live" a much more enjoyable listen. Two guys just shooting the breeze and talking about whatever they want to talk about. They crank out an Ep. every day, so I only listen to 1-2 per week. But I like them. I used to listen to 2-3 Carolla eps per week, to fill the time between other podcasts. But that dude has essentially become a right-wing nut job who rants about masks, lockdowns, and vaccines in pretty much every Ep. Also, Gina Grad, his co-host, has become an insufferable kiss ass. I tapped out a couple years ago and haven't looked back. Found TBTL earlier this year and have enjoyed it.

Thanks, I will definitely check that out, probably on my way home from work today.

Here's one for you: I did a quick search and it seems we've never talked about it here (which is weird because I could swear we have), but I'm not sure there's ever been a better podcast pound for pound than Mystery Show hosted by Starlee Kine. It ended back in like 2015 but all eps are still available. If you've not ever checked it out start with the episode Belt Buckle. I stumbled onto it because someone on Twitter referred to it as the single greatest episode of any podcast in history. I can't speak to that, but it's definitely the best episode of any podcast I've ever listened to.

Yeah I haven't listened to Carolla since probably back when I actually listened to podcasts on an ipod. Probably since Alison (was that her name?) was on the show. I guess he abruptly fired her because she wasn't enough of a kiss-ass? I've also seen Adam's right wing weirdness on Twitter and no thanks. Anybody who has Dr. Drew's back re: the pandemic needs to take an L, but he refuses.

Anyway, I'm not a Smartless regular, but I do tune in if I love the guest. Most of my podcast listening is split between Conan, Fly on the Wall, and Ben Baller.

You can't deny that they get great guest. Listened yesterday to an interview with Steve Carrell, who doesn't do a lot of podcasts. My favorite podcast is still Marc Maron's WTF, because he also has great guests, and he doesn't really do interviews. He has hour long conversations.

They get the very best. I think you nailed what all such podcasts should aspire to with your description of Maron,

As a decades long viewer of SNL, I feel like Fly on the Wall was made for me and it could be so good if Dana Carvey had a Matt Gourley type producer to keep him focused. Spade consistently crushes and saves the show most episodes and he's why I continue to listen. He makes some of the typical celebrity turned interviewer mistakes but generally is able to come back to the point after a divergence. Carvey flails, and seems to know it, often joking about being a narcissist who isn't suited to interviewing. Take my criticisms of Smartless and multiply them by 10 for Dana. He needs organization.

Same. I've been obsessed with SNL since I was too young to stay up to watch it in the early 80s. It has been by far the most interesting podcast I've ever listened to. I don't really have the same criticisms about Dana Carvey since I'm happy to listen to him ramble. They do make a good team, though. I have always been fond of David Spade, but I don't ever think I really ever gave him the credit he deserves.

                    • I haven’t even heard of Smartless or Too Beautiful to Live. I’ll try them out. Thanks.

                      • I really only listen to podcasts while exercising or commuting. I have subscribed to several on my feed and when I need to listen to something I just look at thevepisode titles to see if something jumps out to me. The only consistent listen is The Fifth Column. I also listen to a lot of The Rest Is History with historians Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook.

                        • Still slowly moving through the history of rock music in 500 songs. I may never finish it. But for those of you who didn’t heed my advice, listen to episodes 36-38. Super interesting trilogy of how Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Elvis intersected at Sun Records.

                          • I listened to this on NPR yesterday in the car. It was really interesting. Did you realize that the disparity between men and women in college when Title IX was created is more than reversed today? It was a fascinating discussion, and I might have to read the book now.
