Has Rush always had this rep? In my high school days, just north of 20 years ago, while Rush wasn't as popular as say Motley Crue, in no way were they considered nerdy or uncool. Now maybe that's just dorky me not knowing any better, but there were several objectively cool kids at the Presto concert in June of 1990!
I caught the Time Machine tour (and several times before) but missed them last night. What was the setlist like? Heavy on the new stuff?
Started with a nod towards the older stuff as Subdivisions led off the show with Limelight not too far behind. Then the show took a turn and went towards the newer stuff. They ended with the usual Spirit of Radio and Tom Sawyer.
The multimedia extravaganza backing them was brilliant as usual. Also one of the bets things about Rush is their penchant for self deprecation in their videos. I really think they enjoy acting in their visuals. Oftentimes with hilarious results.
One other thing. People used to go to basketball games just to see Jordan, the best basketball player in the world, ply his trade. The same applies to watching Peart from Rush. MPFunk will probably disagree whipping you an obscure example from the jazz world, but Neal Peart really is the best drummer on the planet. Whenever you get to see someone work, who happens to be the best in the world at their craft, it's a treat.

Of course, if you know anything about the band or Freaks and Geeks, you'll know that there are lots of inside jokes here. Neil Peart worships Buddy Rich. Joe Flaherty ("he couldn't drum his way out of a paper bag!") is a big Rush fan and recorded a video clip for them that they used in their Grace Under Pressure tour.

I wouldn't even need an obscure example to rebut this point.
