I love stand up, I keep meaning to start a thread about it to learn about new comics. Bill Burr's new album is great.
I love Bill Burr. I first heard about him listening to an interview of Vince Gilligan talking about the Kuby character on Breaking Bad. He said that Bill Burr, who plays Kuby, was also a great comedian. I checked him out after that. He's by far my favorite comedian going right now.

you should call the thread "what stand up comedian are you listening to at this very moment?"

I had one typed up once that was called "CUF Evening at The Improv" but I couldn't pull the trigger.

        • I noticed Peaky Blinders was on Netflix a couple weeks ago. I've gone through three episodes, and it's quite good. It has a little Guy Richie influence to it and is overall much more entertaining than Boardwalk Empire, which it will inevitably draw comparisons to. The cast in Peaky Blinders is much better than that of Boardwalk.

Netflix must have a contract with the.BBC to get their shows that PBS can't pick up.

When you take Game of Thrones out of the mix, the overall production out of the BBC is probably equal to HBO. Other than Game of Thrones, Silicon Valley and True Detective, I don't care to watch anything else on HBO. But those aforementioned shows are certainly worth the price of subscription to HBO for the months they're on.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

          • Part of that deal must be the right to call these shows "Netflix Originals," when they clearly are not.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

It's more difficult to say Netflix Originals in North America.

Happy Valley was also really good.

PBS gets the BBC shows that they can play on broadcast TV. That's why they get first dibs on Sherlock. But Peaky Blinders, Happy Valley and The Fall have material that can't be shown on PBS. At the same time, these aren't exactly HBO shows with pointless vulgarity and nudity (it's not that there's no nudity or f-words, but they're used sparingly).

              • Lots of buzz about Black Mirror, the new Netflix show that originally aired on Channel 4 in the UK. I've watched the first two episodes and have to say it is a pretty remarkable, thought-provoking show. Each episode is self-contained fictional story that takes place in the near future. So far, it seems to be exploring the impact technology has on society (it is not as boring as that sounds though). I've seen it compared to The Twilight Zone, if that helps (I've never seen The Twilight Zone, so I don't know how apt the comparison is). Highly recommended if you are willing to accept some implausibility (and a lack of censorship).

Here's a review that probably explains it better than I did:

This show has been recommended to me so many times over the past couple of years, and by such a wide variety of people that I may to have to break down and watch it. I just need to get over the shock of Stringer Bell being British.

Certainly flips the script on a traditional whodunit, since you know whodunit from the outset. And I give the show props for making me feel seriously conflicted about the killer by the end.
