I felt increasingly further out of the 18-34 demographic with each episode. Rob Lowe's parts were entertaining but beyond that it just made me feel old. I'd give the first episode a B, and the series itself a D.

'This is Where I Leave You' was an ensemble comedy/drama that was pretty fun, but a bit rated R. Not too much, but fairly racy.

I always thought a Philosophy of Comedy course would be interesting. With a pluralistic audience, how far is too far? When the audience is homogenous, how do the lines change? And more fundamentally, should there be restrictions on comedy at all?

Yes, and include Jerry Seinfeld. I don't mind a well-placed (or British-inflected) F word, but as you note it's too often only a crutch with little if any wit.
