Finally, you are kind of making my point. Yes, I am fully aware that we have become extremely coarse and vulgar in our public speech, especially in the 20-40 year old crowd. But much of the cast (season 1 at least - can't speak for the others) were over 40 and all were educated professionals. Yet, they all seemed to be trying to talk like there were in a sorority or frat house or short-order cooks in a kitchen. It seemed like the writers were trying waaaay too hard to made it hip and edgy via vulgarity.

I don't mind violence or sexuality in movies as long as it is consistent with the context and not gratuitous. Same goes for profanity. I LOVED The Big Lebowski in spite of a zillion f-bombs because it fit the characters perfectly.

Anyway, that is only one issue I had with the series. The other thing that made me laugh is how they all lived in big beautiful homes and drove amazing cars (that blue Bronco is gorgeous - I would kill for that car) on therapist salaries. Ha!
I don't think you are naive. But I also don't think the profanity in the first season performative. As I said before, I didn't even notice that the show had any more profanity than any other current MA show. Your comments were surprising to me -- not wrong, of course, just surprising.

      • I tried to watch Shrinking. I found it incredibly boring so I stopped halfway through the first season. I only made it that far since I had downloaded the first season and tried watching it on a plane...and it was the only thing I had on my phone for that flight. I think I ended up playing Freecell instead, which was way more interesting.

I am happy your life has been so blessed that you don't identify with any of the characters.

            • I watched 3 episodes of Shrinking when it first came out. I hope it got better, because it wasn't enough for me then to keep going.

              • I’m in the middle of episode 1 of Season 3 and I will just say they should’ve ended it after season 2. I’m open to the possibility it gets better but this episode is bad through the halfway mark. I’m bummed because I loved the first two seasons. Also, Jeff I haven’t actually been counting fucks but I’d take the over on o/u 30 at 30 min.

edit: second half was stronger but still weak compared to previous seasons. Strong final scene though. I’ll stick with it for now.

I mean, its one episode (maybe half an episode). They can't all be great!

                  • I watched the newest episode and all I could hear was JL saying “that f bomb was forced!”

                    Thanks for nothing, Lebowski!!

                      • If any one is keeping score, I'm with JL on the language in Shrinking. I don't have very sensitive ears and spend plenty of time around people with creative vocabularies. But they were trying too hard to be edgy, especially early on.

I'm feeling you big dog. Trying a bit too hard.

I liked the show, but doubt I'll watch Season 3. Not because of the swearing but because it was giving me a very dim view of the therapy industry. The therapists on the show are hyper dysfunctional, emotionally immature, overpaid, and should have no role in guiding the lives of others.

                                Preach.

Yeah, I remember in season 1 when one of the therapists (Gaby) tells Jimmy's teenage daughter that the next time she has sex with her boyfriend she should try sticking her finger up his rear end (delivered in more direct and colorful language of course).

My eyes about rolled out of my head. An adult talking like that to a minor? And a therapist to boot? Creepy and inappropriate as hell.
