And hey, I am not anti-profanity per see (see my moniker), but it seemed like the writers worked over time to work as many F-bombs and profanity into every single line. Who in the hell talks like this 24/7? Seemed performative and absurd.

But hey, I am glad you guys enjoyed it.
This comment is a little surprising to me, since I don't recall this show having an especially large number of f-words or other profanity. In fact, I can't think of any particular line containing profanity. Of course, I am NOT saying there's not a lot of profanity. I just don't remember where. Its an MA show on Apple, so.

The is a funny full circle moment for me. I recall many years ago responding to a movie review by MarkGrace and asking what the movie was rated. He said he wasn't really sure (it ended up being a gritty R). I asked if there was a lot of profanity, as an obvious indicator, but he didn't remember. That blew my mind.

I guess I'm all grown up now.

Edit: Oh, the other reason that replied to your comment was that I know LOTS of educated professionals in my community (not talking heavy machine operators) that use profanity virtually all the time. I'm not sure exactly when it turned, but profanity has become sooooooo common in the U.S. Kind of like tattoos.

In other words, EVERYONE under the age of 40 and not LDS talks like that.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

My son is geeked. He loves this stuff.
Something happened to me (thankfully) as a teen, because every single one of my high school friends LOVES these books and similar series, but I cannot force myself to even pick one up. They are all so stoked about this development.

I guess if it ends up as good as Game of Thrones or something, I might read one.

Was talking to the rep from a vender that stopped by work today. We had a good chat talking about things. He's a retired Navy guy. He says he really likes living in Utah and that it has helped him to clean up his language. That said, he's over 40.

          • There are moments in shows that are touching. In S2 the final episode was one of those moments. This is where the grumpy Harrison Ford finally opens up and speaks to his core group about having Parkinson's Disease.

Here is the speech Harrison Ford gave, but there is also a true story behind that speech that was revealed in an interview that makes it much more profound and touching. The Produce/Writer (Bill Lawrence) also produced/directed Spin City and it was revealed where the speech for Harrison Ford in Shrinking came from and how Bill Lawrence inserted it into this scene.

            The Thanksgiving Speech:

            Interview of Ted McGinley (The neighbor) sharing the connection of the speech to Michael J. Fox and Spin City;

Bill Lawrence has done several of my favorite shows. Ted Lasso and Scrubs being the top one. Love that show. Super excited to see what Bill Lawrence does with it. I am going to assume he will also be involved and produce the 4th season of Lasso. Shrinking is also climbing the charts..

First of all, it is adorable how you think I am naive.

Second, I know what you do for a living and where you live. Of course there is a lot of profanity!

Finally, you are kind of making my point. Yes, I am fully aware that we have become extremely coarse and vulgar in our public speech, especially in the 20-40 year old crowd. But much of the cast (season 1 at least - can't speak for the others) were over 40 and all were educated professionals. Yet, they all seemed to be trying to talk like there were in a sorority or frat house or short-order cooks in a kitchen. It seemed like the writers were trying waaaay too hard to made it hip and edgy via vulgarity.

I don't mind violence or sexuality in movies as long as it is consistent with the context and not gratuitous. Same goes for profanity. I LOVED The Big Lebowski in spite of a zillion f-bombs because it fit the characters perfectly.

Anyway, that is only one issue I had with the series. The other thing that made me laugh is how they all lived in big beautiful homes and drove amazing cars (that blue Bronco is gorgeous - I would kill for that car) on therapist salaries. Ha!

                        • You guys keep ignoring what I am saying. I am not opposed to profanity! Duh. I am opposed to the overly performative and pretentious nature of the dialog in this series.

I am glad you all like it. Different strokes.

Perhaps because we're even more elderly than you, we were also bothered by the surfeit of f bombs, especially at moments where it seemed not just gratuitous but forced. But after a while we began to ignore it in favor of enjoying the multiple arcs of people dealing with loss and pain, and the redemptive power of selfless community.

                              • JL: What made it easier for me was to look at it from several perspectives of the current arch's of those in the show.

The Main lead. He is fighting to live without his wife and is completely angry with the world. His pain and emotions came out in his juvenile and inability to be an adult. hence, the cussing was in nature part of that persona in the show. He is totally messed up and a therapist. WHAT!!

His daughter: Fits her age and teenage angst attitude and also the loss of her Mom.

Client/PTSD: Again, fits his age and his overall situation and all the things that are messed up in is life..

The Neighbor/Mother: She is an empty-nester who just doesn't give a fuck.. She is lost and her only true-north is raising her kids and the daughter of her dear friend who needs her and has become the surrogate mother for now.

The Neighbor/Husband: Recently retired, going through his own mid-life crisis of what to do with no focus in life. Decides to revert back to his sorority college days..

Female Therapist: Messed up life with major family issues but also fits the age where cussing is a thing..

Harrison Ford: Grumpy old man who is angry with the world and may be the one who cusses less than everyone but does in the appropriate times.

There are other characters like the gay-friend who steals the show with his innate kind heart but overly judgyness towards all things in life. He is a rather endearing character. But truthfully. They have their issues, messed up lives and the cussing to me just fits the overall points in all of their lives. All of them are their very own Greek tragedy.. It has allowed me to just breeze past the cussing. And truthfully. It is not juvenile but relatable to their lives..

Not trying to convince you or change your mind. Just my own through process of the show. It is an excellent show. I love the damage they all have but are a tribe.. Melting pot of so many different people who love each other. And I am excited to see Michael J. Fox guest-role this season. And he cusses ( #Fuck Parkinson's)
