Burt Lancaster as a powerful and ruthless gossip columnist in New York and Tony Curtis as a sleazy press agent trying to curry favor with him. Awesome, awesome movie.
Hey thanks, I love film noir. I put it into my Netflix queue and while I was there, I added a bunch of other films, including SWEETY: The Friends, Betrayal and Murder of Maja Bradaric

I just watched Between the Folds, a movie about origami. Much more entertaining than you'd think.

Funny, I'm a bit of an origami enthusiast myself and actually added that to my queue last week. Haven't watched it yet though.
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

      • Clash of the Titans. Not as bad as I thought. But not good still. Gemma Arterton though is really pretty.

I really wanted to see this, but missed the week in was in theaters. I should rent it.

          • A few I've seen recently:

"Drag Me to Hell"-Funny. I fell asleep halfway through, but that's no reflection of the movie.
"Watchmen"-Interesting ideas, but at almost 3 hours long, I don't know how people with other things to do were able to sit through it. It didn't feel that long, but my goodness.
"Charlie Wilson's War"-Really good. One of the better dark comedies I've seen. Tom Hanks was great, and I can watch Amy Adams in anything.

            • Since Gidget has been gone to Oregon the last couple weeks I have been watching all the movies she probably won't watch with me:

Zombieland - Pretty awesome. Hot Fuzz/Shaun of the Dead Awesome.
              Year One - Horrible.
The Big Lebowski - The Dude Abides
Memento - Probably at the top of my Nolan flicks.
The Goods - Slightly better than Year One.

              • I've watched several over the past couple weeks:

My wife and I enjoyed The TV Set, a low-key satire about the creator of a sitcom pilot (David Duchovny) and the lengths to which Hollywood will go to dumb down a piece of entertainment that doesn't appeal to the lowest common denominator. Sigourney Weaver is great as the network executive: "Originality scares me a little bit. We don't want too much originality." The film itself didn't aspire to any great heights and some of the plot threads didn't go anywhere but it was fun to watch.

I was pretty blown away by The 25th Hour, a Spike Lee movie I had never cared to see until it made a whole bunch of "Best of the Decade" lists. Ed Norton is great. Brian Cox is great. The score and some of the 9/11 focus was overbearing but for the most part I found the film to be incredibly moving.

We finally got around to watching The Long Goodbye, Robert Altman's take on Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe character. A classic from the mid-70s height of New Hollywood and now one of my favorite Altman movies.

And then we dove into Dexter. Season one was a blast and we're starting on Season two. Michael Hall is fantastic but the strength of his performance only further illuminates my main problem with the show: No other character is anywhere near as interesting as Dexter. The show seems to lag tremendously when he's not on screen. The series would be much stronger if it had a quality ensemble backing him up. Having said that though, and acknowledging that I'm several years late to the party on this one, the series is about as crack cocaine addictive as it gets. I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes from here.

                • The Stranger, Orson Welles, Edward G. Robinson and Loretta Young. I have never seen Orson young and handsome as he is in this movie.

                  • Inglorious Basterds. That was a lot of fun. And man was Christoph Waltz deserving of the Oscar. He was fantastic. Probably my favorite QT film now supplanting Kill Bill.

Why have I not seen this? This must be rectified.

I think you'll get more from Doakes in the second season, although I agree with what you're saying.

I think it's because he hasn't seen season 2 Rita yet.

                            • I just got back from seeing "the American" kind of slow paced and confusing at times but entertaining. There were some suspenseful moments and jumpy moments that added a nice twist to the movie. It could have been better and explained things a little better but on the whole a decent movie.

Oh and you see violante placido naked a lot

                              • Follow up on MRD's review of the American:

I'm glad he liked it, and all the points he brings up are true, and there is a lot of Violante skin.

That said, this is a chick movie. Chick, chick, chick, chick, chick. Or a European movie. Same thing.

Don't be lured into thinking this is an action movie based on the guns. It is about loneliness and emotional connection and inevitability. Feelings are shared--not verbally expressed a la Sex and the City, but examined nonetheless.

Clooney's Up in the Air explored the same themes.

                                Two things bothered me:
                                Spoiler for 2 things:
                                1. It was such a small italian town that everyone knew Clara was a prostitute, and everyone knew a foreign American was in town, but no hub-bub over the body count? No nosy politzia asking questions?

                                2. I know Clooney is supposed to be an expert but absolutely no way he builds that gun without machining.
