I really enjoyed Belfast, more than did Mrs. PAC (“too depressing at times—I wanted to fix things”). It will certainly be a Best Picture nominee (and at the moment, has to be the frontrunner to win, as it checks all the boxes favored by Academy voters). Its story is the beginning of The Troubles in Northern Ireland in 1969, seen through the eyes of a nine-year old, played superbly by a wonderful Jude Hill. The movie is an autobiographical tribute by director/writer Kenneth Branagh and reflects the young boy’s love of movies and comic books (his favorite is Thor, which Branagh would direct in a movie forty years later). It’s mostly black and white (although movies and a play seen through the eyes of a nine-year-old are in color, a slightly precious tribute to the magic of art). And I would have liked to switch on English closed-captioning, as the Irish dialects were tough at times to understand. But the direction and cinematography are beautifully done, and I liked the Van Morrison-heavy soundtrack. Not a movie for the kids, but great if you want a touching, informative, and ultimately satisfying trip to the cineplex.

I saw the trailer for Belfast and it looks gorgeously shot. Your good recommendation is all I need to watch it now."...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

Seconded. Loved the acting and cinematography. Mrs. NWC said she missed about 15% of the dialogue, which sounds about right.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostI really enjoyed Belfast, more than did Mrs. PAC (“too depressing at times—I wanted to fix things”). Saw Belfast as my first visit to the theater since Covid hit. I'm not really the target of it (my wife and daughter picked it), but I thought it was very good and beautifully made. The little boy was great, as was Judi Dench. I probably didn't like it as much PAC did, but like I said, I'm probably not the right guy to be th ejudge of it.

I wasn't planning on watching The Rescue, the movie about the Thai kids who were trapped deep in a cave, but an 8.4 IMDB rating and 96/96 Rotten Tomatoes scores impelled me to tune in (it's a National Geographic film available on Disney+). It was excellent. The resiliency of the kids, the massive effort that went into the rescue attempt, and the herculean efforts of the rescuers really got to me. Especially touching were the post-attempt comments from the key rescuers who had been social misfits, even losers, which is what drove them to the weird and rare sport of cave diving. Then suddenly they get called from halfway around the world to try to do what no one else can. Watch it.

We watched this last night and really enjoyed it. Our family listened to the podcast (Against The Odds Season 1) this summer while traveling, so the kids were all familiar with the story. It (the podcast) focuses a lot on the boys and their families and back stories, so it was really cool for my kids to actually see the video footage of the boys when they were first found.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostI wasn't planning on watching The Rescue, the movie about the Thai kids who were trapped deep in a cave, but an 8.4 IMDB rating and 96/96 Rotten Tomatoes scores impelled me to tune in (it's a National Geographic film available on Disney+). I watched Stillwater on a plane ride last week. I actually really liked it. And as someone who has lived in New England and the oil patch for significant amounts of time, I have to give Matt Damon props for nailing the South Boston trash kid in Good Will Hunting, and for somehow absolutely nailing an oil rig roughneck in this movie. I mean, the boots, the posture, the accent, the goatee, the mannerisms, etc. The film may just be okay to the seasoned critic (again, I though it was solid), but Damon did a great job channeling his inner Oklahoma redneck.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.
