Loving and supporting husband that I am, I took the wife to see this tonight. It didn't suck, but its 41/64 Rotten Tomatoes ratings seem about right. I would have liked it a lot less were it not for Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand (their "I Can't Fight This Feeling" duet was a nice touch). And Giamatti was very good as well.Originally posted by Shaka View PostMy Rock of Ages Review:
Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, and Paul Giamatti steal the show, music is great, Tom Cruise didn't suck (for once), and Julianne Hough needs to embrace the fullness of the everlasting gospel just a bit more.
Julianne Hough is a cute girl, but it was awfully tough to see her as a rising rock star. It reminded me of the more serious 1976 A Star is Born in which Babs Streisand was cast as an obscure singer who goes on to megastar status as a rocker. I believe it was Time's review that noted something like "Barbara Streisand as a rock star is like imagining Kate Smith taking Woodstock by storm."

Wow, that is a great line.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostI believe it was Time's review that noted something like "Barbara Streisand as a rock star is like imagining Kate Smith taking Woodstock by storm."Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...
None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.
I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

Had you read the book TTSS before? Without having read it I'm not sure I would have had a clue what was going on. It was generally okay, but seemed a little too concerned with style over substance at times. Oldman was great except for the scene where he acted out his conversation with Karla, though I don't think anyone could have salvaged that scene as written and directed.Originally posted by Color Me Badd Fan View PostJust watched The Debt and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Meh on The Debt.
Yes on Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Aren't there other books involving Gary Oldman's character? They should have dropped some of the f bombs and made the movie PG-13 and promoted it some more. They could have made a franchise out of it maybe.

The Amazing Spider Man is getting 90% positive reviews.
I'd heard some rumors that it was going to be terrible -- I guess they were wrong. Sony obviously feels strong enough about it to spend some serious cash promoting it. Glad to hear it's good.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Yeah that is a relief. I didn't want it to suck, just had that sneaking suspicion based on Peter Parker's clothing choices. I do love that they bring in the O.G. spidey villain The Lizard for this one.Originally posted by Color Me Badd Fan View PostThe Amazing Spider Man is getting 90% positive reviews.

It always bothered me that they had Dr. Curt Connors in the last couple Spider-Man movies but never had him show up as the Lizard. Why where they teasing me!?Originally posted by Commando View PostI do love that they bring in the O.G. spidey villain The Lizard for this one.Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

My Sister's Sister
It was entertaining, but probably largely in part only because I'm a big Mark Duplass fan. I understand this whole movie was ad libbed, which is pretty amazing. Actually the dialogue was pretty great, which is a credit to the actors. The dialogue seemed very natural in the same way as Good Will Hunting. Not much of a traditional plot to speak of, but there is some pretty great character development and a pretty innovative arc of conflict resolution. Great if you like lo-fi movies w lots of dialogue.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Pretty great for an awful movie, if that makes sense. The vampires were scarier than shit, which was cool. Also, the movie is CHOCK full of those slow-mo fight/action motifs that the new Sherlock Holmes movies sort of popularized. Fun to watch, but they do get a bit repetitive.
Also, the movie is campy in a fun way- but I'm not sure if that was by choice. Lots of groan-worthy lines and moments, but ones that you groan with a smile (not that way, sickos). Upon meeting Stephen A. Douglas (who was courting Mary Todd- HA) who opines on slavery as a most complex issue, Lincoln turns to him and in full Honest Abe Mode states, "Why I don't think I could disagree more, Mr. Douglas," in clear reference their famous real-life political rivalry and famously spirited debates, and causing a groan to escape my lips. Many more moments like this happen as cameos historical figures pop up left and right. Lots of unrealistic things, but for a fantasy movie about vampires, I was surprised that the most unrealistic thing was the portrayal of Lincoln's romantic relationship w/ Mary Todd and how she is all hot and what not.
It did run a bit long, and so that was a drag because it stops being fun when you're checking the time waiting for the final climactic action scene to resolve. Great visually, so that makes up for a lot. See it if you're so inclined

Saw Brave. More adults than children in the matinee I sat through. I think all the scotts who live in SLC came out of the woodwork for this one. Great movie. Strong female characters with the men reduced to supporting roles. Very entertaining for adults. Beautiful animation, especially Merida's hair tendrils.
The feature film was preceeded by a 7-minute italian short cartoon that was breathtakingly beautiful. La Luna. I think I hear Oscar buzz. Don't be late.

Well, you're not wrong there. It was nominated at this past Academy Awards but didn't take home the big prize. Great short.Originally posted by Katy Lied View Post

I think I will like Brave-- I sat through the first 30 minutes to kill time between movies on Friday. I agree about La Luna, too-- I thought that was part of the movie so I was confused for a second- ha.Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostSaw Brave. I saw some more clips of The Amazing Spiderman and I've come all the way around to being excited about this release on Tuesday. From what I saw, it has sort of a creepy, vulnerable, dark tone to it-- more like the comic book. Also, I like that Peter Parker is a high school student and not like a grad assistant or whatever Toby McGuire was."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! Ted
I don't know why Seth MacFarlane has taken this long to get into movies. Although it got very formulaic and
plot-wise in parts, I laughed really really hard during this movie. Loved it.
