  • I watched The Artist yesterday. Cool movie, although the silent movie format had me squirming a bit in my seat just because it was putting my ADD to the test a little.

Very cool. Hey HFN, how old are your boys? I've taken my young daughter to the Oscar Nominated Animated Shorts program for the past two years and wanted to know if this year's is all kid-friendly. She's six.

This past weekend I caught the Oscar Nominated Documentary Shorts and they were pretty fantastic (although, for some reason, they only screened 4 of the 5 nominees, leaving out God Is the Bigger Elvis.)

Incident in New Baghdad was a pretty harrowing story about the July 2007 incident where two journalists and several civilians were killed by US helicopters.

Saving Face was about the hundreds of women in Pakistan each year who are disfigured by acid attacks. It follows their quest to get harsher penalties for their attackers and also the plastic surgeon who is trying to help them restore some normalcy to their lives. Just astonishing. I'd never even heard about this.

The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom is about last year's tsunami and how some of the people affected are trying to cope and find some sense of hope in their lives. It features amazing uncut home video footage of the tsunami washing through towns. It will probably make you cry.

The Barber of Birmingham was maybe my favorite. It's about an 85 year old African-American barber on the eve of Obama's election who was one of the "foot soldiers" in the Civil Rights movement 50 years ago. One of the guys who may never have a monument dedicated to him, but without whose efforts the whole movement wouldn't have worked. He was on every march, at every protest, sent his two sons to a newly integrated school and served time in jail alongside his wife and teenage daughter. It makes you remember that everyone has a story to tell. Great stuff.

I think all are available on iTunes and other places: http://theoscarshorts.shorts.tv/index.php
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

I saw it on Sunday night. I wanted to fast forward most of the first half. The final 20 minutes or so were really great. Berenice Bejo looked... really great as well.

The older two are 9 and 7. I need to stop saying I take "the boys" places as it doesn't usually include the baby who is 17 months and me using that phrase makes my wife angry.

              • Watched "Rubber" on Netflix Saturday w/ the family.
                From wikipedia:
"Rubber is a 2010 French comedy film about a tire that comes to life and kills people with its psychic powers. It was directed and written by Quentin Dupieux. The film was shown at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival."

Netflix said the tire's name was Robert, although nobody ever called him by name in the movie.
Probably would have enjoyed it even more with some weed brownies.

Both were really good. "A Separation" deserved more processing time than I gave it, though.

Agreed about the need for processing time. The movie is very thought-provoking.
Spoiler for A word about A Separation's conclusion.:
I'm a bit of a simpleton when it comes to cinema, and I tend to like a neat, clear conclusion. This movie doesn't provide it. With the three affected parties (parents and daughter) waiting for a judicial resolution, the credits roll. And yet, that is a perfectly apt finish, because it's clear there won't be a satisfactory conclusion, nor can there be. Deeply affecting, and terribly sad.

I really enjoyed the glimpse into everyday Iranian life and the unusual legal system. The film certainly deserved its Best Foreign Film Oscar.

                      • "The Way," starring Martin Sheen, written and directed by his son Emilio Estevez. A few rough spots but really quite good. It's not Emilio's directorial debut, but I think it's only his second feature. Worth seeing.

                        • "The Secret Life of Arrietty"
Saw this with the kids and their cousins yesterday. Very different kind of kid's movie--slower-paced, more "moment"-focused. The animation is fantastic and I loved the use of sound, but I kept worrying that the kids were getting bored. Surprisingly, they all stayed interested and are still talking about it today.

Somehow wasn't as terrible as I thought it was going to be. Weave a little radiohead bit into the story and make a couple prominent uses of the national and you're on my good side.

Made by the same people who made "The Artist" (Dujardin and Bejo as the leads; Hazanavicius as the director). Funny Bond parody.

                              • This is not going to win many any points on the man card but I watched a bootleg copy of the BoM Musical and The Secret World of Arietty.

And as a pre-emptive strike: It wasn't that hard coming out of the closet.
