  • My 6 and 9 year old wanted me to take them to see Star Wars Episode I in 3d.

I can report that it was even more boring than I remembered it and the 3D did nothing to make it better.

In fact, I thought the 3D effects were very poor and a waste of money.

My kids thought it was cool, though.

      Sorry to hear that, Port.

I know my family purchased Episode I when it first came out (it may have been among the first DVD's we owned), but it's been 10 years since I've even had a slight inclination to watch it. I think it's crazy that people are paying $8+ to see it in theaters.

Eh, no biggie. It was a fun time for dad and the boys regardless. They enjoyed it and I enjoyed being with them and seeing them have a good time.

Time well spent, even if the money wasn't. (BTW, it wasn't 8. It was $30+ for the matinee in the xD theater for the three of us. :O )

And he starts offering his opinion on the deep meaning and symbolism in the movie and explains how he is not surprised that the public ignored the critics and came to appreciate its greatness. Then he comes to the US and seems shocked to learn that it is popular solely due to just how awful it is. I also enjoyed where they found the guy who played the creepy old man and he said, "Yeah, I remember there was this little Mormon kid who played the main character. I don't know why, but I really hated that kid. Man, I just could not stand him. So when I was trying to scare him, it was for real." And of course, he doesn't realize that the guy interviewing him is the same kid, 20 years older.

After watching the doc, I discovered that Troll 2 is available on Netflix streaming. I watched the first 45 minutes today and I can see what the fuss is about. Words cannot describe just how horrible this movie is. I mean you couldn't devise a movie this awful if you assembled the top 100 people in Hollywood and gave it your best shot. B-movie perfection.

With the missus out of town yet again, and nothing of interest at the nearby cineplex, I watched this (Best Worst Movie) tonight and really enjoyed it. KL's description and your write up were spot on. I felt bad for the mom in the film who seems to have a pretty serious mental disorder, but I LOL'd at her very elderly mom who cringed while they were acting out a scene from the movie.

          • The boys and I watched Warrior tonight. I enjoyed it for nothing more than I wasn't entirely sure how it was going to end. A poor man's Rocky is probably a good description.

                  • Sorry, thought they released IV on DVD prior to I.

In other news, just watched Pulling John on Netflix. About champion arm wrestler John Breznk, who apparently is from SLC. This documentary tells the story of 3 arm wrestlers, a Brash American with the truly psycho eyes, a spiritual russian who quotes from Tibetan folktales, and John Breznk, a low key puller with an uncanny resemblance to Bronco Mendenhall. The movie is surprisingly compelling.

                    • My 5 yo broke me down into taking her to see Phantom Menace. It was fun to see it in 3d on the big screen. I also think that despite its well known weaknesses that this is a much better film than it got credit for when it was released. Expectations were just too high.

                              I thought it sucked.

                              No redeeming qualities whatsoever.

                              • I watched Mongol based on a recommendation from someone here (creekster?). It's the story of Genghis Khan's rise to power. Produced by a consortium from Germany, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Russia. It was filmed in Mongolia and China and the dialog is in Mongolian and Mandarin. Seems to be mostly (~3/4?) faithful to the historical record. Production quality is not great, but is quite good and the cinematography is breathtaking in parts. Highly recommended.

I was wondering why it only covered the first part of his life, but it looks like it is the first part of a trilogy. Part 2 should be coming out soon.
