A friend of a friend was a producer on a film that had a limited release in theaters, but is really pretty fantastic, IMO. A Late Night With The Devil is currently streaming on Hulu. It’s in the horror genre, so not for everyone. But a very smart film, IMO. I’m going to watch I again because I know there is some stuff I missed the first time.

it’s a period piece, so that’s always visually pleasing when it’s well done. But the plot is clever and the actors are great.

It’s not a slasher film if that’s what you’re asking. It definitely falls into more of a suspense film/possession/occult horror. There is some gore as the plot develops, but I still wouldn’t call it blood and guts gore.

Dunkirk. We arrived at the theater a little late, so we missed the first few minutes. Wish we could have caught that. I was expecting the dialogue to be more difficult to understand.

My middle child is studying WWII in her history class, so I took it upon myself to read excerpts from Churchill's speech, including the following:

I recently watched the all 4 Bad Boys movies. I recommend all of them, but I'd understand why someone would skip Bad Boys. At the minimum, it is a must to watch Bad Boys: For Life and Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

Any Bob Dylan fans here? Has anyone seen A Complete Unknown? I guess it's about his transition from folk to electric and the fall pit from it. That's a super interesting storyline in his career. I'll try to see it this weekend.

We saw it this evening and liked it a lot, although we were teens in the '60s so we probably had a greater interest than might younger folk, Chalamet's performance was outstanding, and the storyline was fascinating, even though Dylan was a jerk--very talented but a jerk. The conflict between folk music purists (esp. Pete Seeger) and the evolving Dylan (Electric guitars! The audacity!) and Dylan's relationship with Joan Baez were fascinating. The final "Like a Rolling Stone" was awesome and vindicates Dylan's shift away from acoustic.

Saw it last night. I really liked it. They conflate a lot of events (the Judas moment was in the UK), but I think it was well done. Ed Norton was also fantastic. The movie did a good job and creating sympathetic characters of Seeger and Lomax, more so than they probably deserved. One aspect I think they failed to portray is the intensity of the political movement that drove Seeger and many of the folk artists and how Dylan's move away from them hurt the attention on their cause. In the movie it's portrayed more about the craft itself, but in reality, the social justice cause was the driving force. Frank may actually know more about this aspect of it than I. I wonder if he's seen the movie yet.

Agree with others about A Complete Unknown. Acting was excellent, the movie was well paced, and music was superb. You don't need to be a Dylan fan to enjoy it.

Where's Commando to talk about Marvel movies?

Anyways, we enjoyed Thunderbolts. We didn't have huge expectations and were pleasantly surprised. There were some very thoughtful scenes about mental illness, regret, and family/friendship. Not Marvel's top tier, but good enough. Solid B.

Sinners. Meh. Two interesting ideas (African American twins returning to home in Mississippi after criming in Chicago to start a night club and fight some racism, and mythology about vampires and musical shamans) that really didn't gel together for me. Music was enjoyable and acting was decent (Jordan seems to always do well), but there were too many threads and not enough time for them to get fleshed out. C+.
