    Spoiler for But...:
For me, this wasn't a back story of the character Joker in the Batman series. This is a story of a person with severe mental health issues that has nothing to do with the Batman world suffering from delusion who pictured himself as someone becoming the Joker. Right? The final TV scene with Deniro and the escape from police and cop killing scene never happened. It ended with him locked up in the mental hospital. If it's that, it's a great film. The delusions increased as he came off his medicine. He's not the Joker.
It was both about mental health, but also about sociolgocial issues of what happens when we essentially throw people away, the mentally, the losers, the failers etc. It was painful to see the pitiful system fail to support Art.

This has always been my take, however, I don't think he's precluded from being the Joker. At least, not the first iteration of the Joker, anyway. (In fact, those dramatic delusions could have been a catalyst to creating the criminal madman who eventually does act out). The comics have various "generations" of the Joker. In fact, Jared Leto's Joker that people didn't like was supposedly the third Joker and a corrupted, former 'Robin.'

        OK. I get that.

        • Parasite, a Korean movie by Bong Joon Ho, has a 99% Rotten Tomatoes rating and has an 8.5 on IMDB. Some are touting it as the best movie of 2019. But I didn’t love it, or even like it all that much. It’s very well made with lots of interesting shots and a few very surprising plot twists. But I ended up feeling dissatisfied and even a little depressed by the overall theme, which focuses on issues surrounding class division (in that regard I found myself pulling for what I assume is the wrong team).

I haven’t seen Joker, in part because I expect I’d feel the same way about that as I did with Parasite—a very well-made film but not a fun night at the cineplex.

That said, I’d love to discuss Parasite with friends (Mrs. PAC opted out in favor of an RS auxiliary training meeting), and that’s often a sign of a good movie, which it is. Let me know if any of you want to join the conversation…

          • Saw the Lighthouse a week or so ago. It was pretty good. But not great. Well acted. It feels like a play, is filmed in black and white, stars Cedric Diggory the twilight vampire guy and the homeliest actor of our generation, aka Willem Dafoe, and shows plenty of Cedric engaged in furious and wild-eyed self pleasure, which was a bit much, in my mind, but whatever. Bottom line for me is that it has a lot of great elements but the whole ends up being much less satisfying or meaningful than its parts.

Also saw Harriet , the Harriet Tubman biopic, which was very well done, although a bit formulaic. Much more enjoyable experience and one I recommend.
            PLesa excuse the tpyos.

            • The Irishman-- I saw this at the Egyptian in L.A. on Friday-- so good. Classic Al Pacino, who is amazing in this, DeNiro is awesome, and Joe Pesci is also great, if not a little reserved compared to his other Scorsese roles lol. Worth a theatre viewing if it's in your area, but it's 3 1/2 freaking hours long. Probably be great to break up into a couple Netflix viewings in a couple weeks.

This is a movie that will win Oscars, so no wonder it's getting the obligatory theatre run to qualify it. I did get a little set of movie poster placards from Netflix as a parting gift. Fun times at the movies.

It's on my list. How laborious is it to get into?

                • I saw The Lighthouse. It's directed by Robert Eggers who also helmed the VVitch. It's B&W and has basically a two person cast in Dafoe and Pattinson. It's really intense and basically a horror film about the descent into paranoia and madness.

I wouldn't have been able to pay enough attention to it if I were at home.

I'm tired this evening so I'm not sure what you mean by "to get into." Literally, it was very easy to get into as it was playing at the local multiplex and I was one of only a dozen or so patrons. As for getting into the storyline, it's not hard to follow, as long as you don't mind reading subtitles, although the conversation is often fast-paced to read quickly. Initially, the tone is that of a fairly lighthearted comedy, but things change.

                      I loved it.

The poor family (the Kims?) cracked me up. They were so funny. The Dad wanting the free fumigation and kids trying to get a WiFi signal and forge credentials was interesting.

Like you said there was a lot of interesting symbolism and commentary on class. I thought it was cool the way the Kims were often huddled together in close physical proximity while the wealthy Parks stayed far away from each other for the most part.

Definitely a macabre and depressing ending but I would watch it again.

Yes, that's a good point about theater vs. home, depending on your home environment, I suppose. I thought it was prettyy good, and well-acted but at times it felt a little too well-acted. Like I was watching a film school graduate thesis or something.

                        • Motherless Brooklyn I liked the movie, but I really, really wanted to like it more than I did. Norton was solid. Baldwin played a racist asshole with unsurprising ease. Dafoe nailed the weird MFer (again!)

I think it's worth seeing, but I thought it had Oscar written all over it, but I'm not so sure.

                          • I saw Doctor Sleep and I loved it. I've never read The Shining or Doctor Sleep, so I'm not offended by artistic liberties. Mike Flannegan, who is one of my favorite modern horror directors (The Haunting of Hill House, Hush, Oculus, Ouija:Origin of Evil, and others) does really at adapting source material while still respecting it. At times this has more of a fantasy vibe than The Shining, but the antagonists were pretty frightening.

I loved it as well. Saw it last night. It's long, but didn't ever really feel it.
