My son saw Rambo and enjoyed explaining to me how all of the violence was so over the top. It's not enough that Rambo knifes a bad guy in the clavicle-- he has to reach in and seize the bone and twist it and break it and pull it out. Or somesuch. Look forward to your review of Downton Abbey. I'm a little dismayed that I cannot find Dan Stevens in any of the previews on tv.

Hahaha I was never too enamored with the Rambo series, but I like Stallone for life on the strength of Rocky alone and it's a shame if this last movie was terrible.

First Blood is legitimately a very good movie. It still stands up. The rest of the movies, not so much.

Hahaha I was never too enamored with the Rambo series, but I like Stallone for life on the strength of Rocky alone and it's a shame if this last movie was terrible.

Rocky has a special place for me. I loved Rocky IV. It’s one of the few movies I saw in the theater as a kid. I’ll see Last Blood just because I like Stallone and frankly I liked Rocky VI

Downton Abbey was fun because you do get attached to the characters and it's great to have them back on screen. otherwise i was mostly underwhelmed by the story and was bored at times. ultimately, however, an enjoyable, feelgood 2+ hours at the theater.

We really enjoyed the movie. Having visited Highclere, some of that interest is in that context. The story line was interesting, if shallow. It's difficult to give it more depth when you only have two hours of screen time, and a few days of story line to work with. On TV, you had a whole season or more to work through conflicts.

I can't wait to see it. I do hope they revisit the Mr. Bates is under investigation and in jail for murdering his ex-wife subplot. So awesome.

Really enjoyed Ad Astra, but that's because you folks prepped me for the slow pace and the complicated human relationships. I'm intriqued by what gave it the slow pace- cause there is plenty of action. Was it the sedate background music? The lack of crashes and special effects noises? Especially the battle with the pirates on Mars? Those scenes reminded me of battle scenes in The Expanse, no sound in space battles. The way battle participants were cool and collected and followed procedures instead of taking time to show surprise, or fear, or other emotions that would ramp up audience excitement? (The one guy who goes berzerk just freezes).

I found the tone of the movie's final scenes very similar to Ordinary People, if you're old enough to remember that one. A son dealing with the emotional shortcomings of his parents. In Ordinary People, Timothy Hutton had to forgive his mother for wishing him dead instead of his golden brother, and he had to forgive his brother for not being strong enough to survive.

Spoiler for Spoiler: Common theme in Ad Astra:

In this one, Brad Pitt had to forgive his father for choosing the possibility of alien life forms over his son, and acknowledging that his father was so emotionally stunted that searching for new life forms held greater value than strengthening existing relationships.

Nice call on the Ordinary People connection, a movie that's in my all-time Top Ten. As the camera pulls away from the father and son at the end I kind of lose it each time.

It was like they opened the mind of someone suffering from extreme mental illness and took a snapshot and turned that into a movie.

If Joaquin Phoenix doesn't win an Academy Award...then that system is broke.

We went to a late showing last night. I agree with much of what you said. We really enjoyed it if you could enjoy something like that. Joaquin was amazing. Didn't think anyone could top Ledger's Joker, but Joaquin did.

I'm surprised to see the critics reviews so mixed on this.

I'll see it. I held off because of the mixed reviews, but you and The_Tick have convinced me to give it a watch.
