The "last movie I saw" thread

We saw La La Land today. LiveCoug, or anyone else who objects to movie characters occasionally bursting into song, should not see this movie.

This is definitely not a typical 2016 movie. It is very well done. The music is very good, Emma Stone is, IMO, great. I don't think the movie is great, but it is quite good and entertaining.

That's how we felt about the movie. Very enjoyable, but not the absolute best movie of the year as some critics claim. Both Stone and Gosling are very good.

And I had high hopes for Why Him? and Collateral Beauty, but the strong negative reviews will keep me away.

You two are a bit more generous in your assessment than I am. I enjoyed it but felt like both Stone and Gosling were underwhelming singers. I think it is a good but not great film. It wants to be like the old style musicals but falls a bit short. Indeed, if it wasn't for a dearth of such musicals in the recent past this one would not look very good at all. The ending was moving and it reminded me of some other old films, which I wont identify to avoid spoiling it.

I recommend it, and it is charming, but it is not great.

My wife went and saw LaLa land with her mom and sisters so I was spared, thank goodness. My wife, surprisingly didn't really like it.

Saw Passengers tonight... Thank goodness that only cost us 2 bucks thanks to tmobile.

Not a fan of their voices. Rates as a Netflix film, not a 12 dollar film for me.

I saw Rogue One again-- definitely better the second time around. There's a lot to like about that movie.

I was pleasantly surprised by Rogue One after having been disappointed by The Force Awakens. The Franchise may still have life in it, or some force of some kind.

Rogue One - Thought it was a lot of fun. Much more entertaining than The Force Awakens. Apparently they altered it fairly heavily since the original trailer, and it all seems to have been for the better. I liked the ending, which seemed much more satisfying than the original ending would have been.

I expected there to be more of the chick trying to decide which path to take - though there was more in the trailer with Forrest's character. That what you're talking about?

Finally saw Rogue One. Good show. I liked it better than The Force Awakens.

Episodes VIII and IX are going to take a turn for the weird and nuanced, I think, with Rian Johnson writing both. That bodes well for those who thought VII was too Disney, too upfront and derivative with the visual throwbacks, etc.

Donny Yen's character, Chirrut, was so cool. Actually, he and Baze Malbus (big guns) are throwbacks to characters/ideas in the original scrapped Star Wars script (whose original title was something like "Excerpt from the Journal of the Whills.") as members of the order of the Guardians of the Whills, who are not Jedi or Sith and have their own beliefs re: the Force. The fact that this movie is so well received and has nothing to do with the Skywalkers bodes well for the movies getting further and further out there.

I didnt really like Yip man. I found him too derivitive of well, Yip Man and Zatoichi, the blind swordsman.

To be really picky, I didn't like his chanting of The Force is with me. It seemed undignified and questioning. If he had been chanting this for decades, it should sound more like ummm, samadhi. And less panicky.

Derivative or no (and really, all Hong Kong flicks are ultimately derivative of each other and is part of the charm of that genre in a way), I thought it was cool in this story because he demonstrates a clear degree of mastery of the Force yet was no jedi. It's also a call-out to the Church of the Force or whatever it is that the guy at the first of The Force Awakens (who gives Poe the map) was a part of, and other disciplines of the Force. It really expands the universe and broadens the scope of what's possible story-wise while also highlighting the true extent of the power the jedi wield. It really adds gravitas to the scene in Return of the Jedi when the Jedi.. uh.. return. Specifically Luke entering Jabba's palace with his newly crafted light saber.
