I like a lot of his other stuff, but at a minimum I thought the named films were pretty universally loved.

    • "Sin City": love the visuals; comic-book storylines were weird and a bit much; the overacting (especially by Brittany Murphy) was great.

"Pan's Labyrinth": really liked it. the young actress who played Ophelia did a fantastic job, and while the general story didn't offer much (duh, it's a fairy tale), the journey was fresh.

Really? I thought it was a great story.

        • For all you purists who won't go see Karate Kid because it is a remake, i went on your behalf, and it was glorious. It was also a paean to China, filled with beautiful and loving shots of the city and countryside. As I watched the chase scene through the market place, I so wanted to be able to smell the sights and sounds I was experiencing.

Jaden Smith has a very mature charisma and can hit his mark like an old pro. I'm extremely sensitive to maudlin sentiments and despite the lush violins, the movie didn't descend into bathos. Jackie Chan was serviceable, and I really enjoyed it. I don't know if I would have enjoyed it less if I'd seen the original. I was told it was pretty faithful.

BTW, I now know the significance of "sweep the leg!"

Interesting. You're the second person today who has sung the praises of this movie. I'm scratching my head.

Had Katy seen the original, she'd understand why a remake is wrong.

BTW, Katy, did you ever post your sure-to-be-better review of The Prince of Persia?

              • The Tower Theater is doing a family movie series this summer so on Wednesday I took my 5 year old to the double feature of the Albert Lamorisse children's classics THE RED BALLOON and WHITE MANE. WHITE MANE was quite good but man, RED BALLOON is just incredibly powerful and captivating. It's an almost wordless story of a little boy in Paris and the possibly magical balloon he comes across and befriends. They end up wandering the streets of 1950s Paris together, keeping each other company and getting into some adventure. I couldn't believe how captivated my daughter was in the story, to the extent that she and the other kids there were practically yelling at the screen at points. Such a departure from the manic SHREK-style crap that dominates a lot of kids' entertainment these days. I bet the Pixar guys watch this movie in their orientation classes for new hires. Classic. Anyone seen this one?
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

Are you talking about The Red Balloon that was made in the 50s? If so, I saw it when I was a youngster - 2nd or 3rd grade and I remember loving it. If it's showing again, I should take my 7 year old to see it.

That's the one! It was only one night unfortunately, but I'll post some of the other family movies they're going to do once they announce them. Man, that show had an impact.

I wonder if I can find that film on DVD. It would definitely be worth owning.

Every person I know who's seen it has liked it. And shockingly the reviews were much better than expected.

The answer to that one is [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Criterion-Collection-Balloon-White-Mane/dp/B001G7ID1E/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1276923056&sr=8-2"]Amazon.com: Criterion Collection: Red Balloon & White Mane: Albert Lamorisse: Movies & TV@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ABycAC45L.@@AMEPARAM@@51ABycAC45L[/ame]. Not only that, but it's pretty inexpensive and it's from the Criterion Collection, which means it's a pretty high quality release. I think I may pick it up myself.

Good to know. I don't think I've ever heard of White Mane, but if it's a double feature purchase, that's cool.

It's a gross oversimplification on my part. Girl uses magical otherworld to escape a tumultuous and painful reality. "Pan's Labyrinth" offers much more than that, obviously.
