We are heading out in a couple hours to see Into the Woods with the entire family. I'm nervous the 5 year old will be too scared.
    Ummm, no.

I'm not familiar with the director's previous films like MG is. But I did enjoy Birdman. Acting was excellent. Cinematography was a pleasure to watch. Some unbroken scenes lasted minutes (though I suspect some of the really long ones were digitally enhanced). I liked that the whole movie had a theater flair to it, dialogue and all, since it essentially all took place in a theater. Mrs. NWC found it very poignant, and saw a lot of parallels to life. I'm not sure if I thought it was all that, but I'd still recommend it. Solid B+.

Really great. The camerawork in this is really cool as the whole movie is basically shot to look like a one-take tracking shot. The camera is always in motion, not in an FNL cinema verite type way, but rather in smooth constant movements that just kind of float around every scene. I've never seen anything else that looks like this. It's also got this layered story, which seems to be full of meta commentary about some of the actors involved (Keaton, Norton).

Pretty nice change of pace for Inarritu as well. Amores Perros/21 Grams/Babel/Biutiful all feel like they came from the same director, but this is a real departure. If you saw this without knowing who directed, you wouldn't guess it was the same guy as those other films.
Finally got a chance to see this. Pretty brilliant stuff. Easily the best movie I've seen this year. The camera work was clever enough to play a prominent role in pushing the film along--almost a silent cast member, if you will--but without a single moment where the ingenuity distracted from the experience.

MILD SPOILER:Perfect example: the way the camera left the theatre after the underwear lockout and the grand re-entrance, only to wait in the hall for Riggan to appear and then promptly follow him down the hall to his dressing room. The viewer didn't need to be in the theatre to know he pulled it off, and the audible applause confirmed it.

Oh, and Emma Stone plays a mean Lindsay Lohan. Better than Lindsay Lohan plays Lindsay Lohan, I have to think.

I said he went to look for him at that time. Not necessarily find him.

And if you've got a problem with my theory then I suggest you bring it up directly with the big man himself. That's right, little BG is the real brains behind the operation. I'm only the mouthpiece, as he is not allowed to create his own CS account yet. Or rather , ever. But I must be honest , LOTR trivia is only a hobby of his. Harry Potter is his true calling, as he has read the series at least once a year for the last 7 years.

You can try, but you can't out-nerd him. He's the only person I know who's memory approaches yours for the minutiae.

        • Unbroken. Yeah, I knew I wasn't going to like it but I allowed myself to be shamed into going. ("The rest of the family is going!"). Angelina Jolie has a deft touch and a surprising take on some of the character interactions (although the Film's Production Designer was prominently credited right behind Ms. Jolie, and I wonder if he was the "real" director of the movie,) but all in all it was awful to sit through. I don't think the story is brave, or noble, or valiant. It was 2-1/2 hours of torture, degradation, fear and catering to the baser instincts of man. You may as well just take a cute puppy and whip him for 3 hours and force me to watch that.

Good suggestion. Saw this last night.

Some seriously funny moments with Franco and Kim Jong Un. I wasn't really even looking forward to seeing this, but I ended up liking this wayy more than I ever thought I would.
I had a similar reaction. Better than I expected considering the negative reviews. The Kim Jong Un character was funny.

              • Into the Woods - Slightly entertaining and somewhat funny at times. Most of it was well done but the story really isn't compelling and it felt like it dragged on for 30 minutes way too much. Probably much better as a Broadway musical than a movie. The giant was also really hokey, like really bad. My two oldest daughters loved the movie. My sons didn't really care for it but thought it was at least worth the 2 hours. MJ thought it was mediocre. My youngest (5) was afraid of the witch but loved the rest....but she's really excited about the upcoming Spongebob movie that we saw in the previews

                • I liked Into The Woods. Yeah, it drags, but I think I read somewhere that Sondheim originally wrote it as a six hour production. There's just a lot of story to fit in there. If you didn't like the movie, you won't like it live--I've seen it twice live and I liked the movie better than both. I was worried what Disney would do with this--it's really not a story with themes kids will relate to and Sondheim music isn't the most accessible. Casting was fantastic, and once again reminded me how awful the Crowe and Jackman choices were in Les Miserables.

It was hard to sit thru, but I liked it. I thought it did the book justice

                      • No, and I have a much higher threshold for suffering in a book as opposed to on screen. (Mel Gibson's the Passion of the Christ was awful for me to sit through as well.) I just get a knot in my stomach and wish that I were anywhere else.

It is definitely slow at times and takes a while for the story to develop. But I thought it was well done a solid movie. A couple of very heart wrenching moments as well.
