  • Couple of small birds that allowed me to get close enough at the refuge.

    • Wow, you really brought things out of shadow and still got a lot of detail. It would be interesting to see the original to see how much processing you had to do (and how much can be done).

      • Originals, with only basic default sharpening. You can click these images to go to my smugmug site and see the full size originals. It was "cloudy bright" conditions--which are my absolute favorite. Thin layer of clouds that diffuse the light.

        • Very cool, thanks. That first one in particular really pops with the processing.

On continued looking, I should lift the shadows more and brighten the 2nd one. It's more detailed than the first. The first one is backlit by the diffuse sun, so I had to capture it darker than normal to prevent blowing out the detail around the outline of the bird--especially the beak--and then lift it in processing.

Which is now done. Much better.

Benham. Might need to walk to Dillon next time (if there is a next time).

                      • Here's the same scene but just a single capture. In a single capture, I have to capture the scene as darker than actual because otherwise the sun blows out everything. Still can make for a dramatic photograph. The HDR above is a blend of 5 images and therefore better matches the original scene. The single capture is sharper since the HDR image is a blend of 5 images captured hand-held.

As a reminder, a full screen browser will allow these images to be seen at their best, otherwise you've got in browser resizing going on which is always messy.

                        • Nearing the end of the fire in the backyard fire pit.

Taken with Galaxy S7, which captured a lot more yellows than what I'm seeing in person. I see much more red tones, not much yellow.

I like them both, but almost the non HDR better
