    This Ol' Truck

I love my truck. It is loud, a little beat up and rough around the edges, just like me. It is a diligent, reliable, powerfull truck. It is a 1995 Ford F-250 Powerstroke Turbo Deisel. It has 265,xxx miles and counting. I have replaced a starter, an alternator and a set of batteries. That is it besides regular maintainance. I have had this truck for the past 10 years (off and on) and it is again my daily driver.

I drove this truck to pick up my wife for our first date. The first time that I told my wife that I loved her, we were sitting on the tailgate of the truck. I was in this truck when I found out that my grandpa had died. There use to be big air horns on the truck. I was in my wife's neighborhood, driving up a large hill, when I passed 2 old ladies walking. Annoyed by the sound of the truck, they yelled at me to slow down. I was going 28 in a 25. After I picked up my wife, and we were heading out of the community, the same old ladies were walking down the hill. This time I let of the gas and coasted up to them and then blasted the airhorns. They jumped 2 feet in the air and into the ditch. One was rolling on the ground and the other got on her feet and flipped me off. It was great. Now I have the chance to make memories with my children in this truck.

I guess the point I am trying to make, is that while it is not the nicest truck around (just ask Surfah...he hates the all maroon interior), it is mine and will be until the motor stops and the wheels fall off.

What are some of the daily drivers out there? I know some have very nice luxury cars, while others are in beaters and everything in between.
    I'm your huckleberry.

2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab

    185,000 odd miles

The wife keeps dropping hints about me "needing" a new vehicle, but I want to see if I can get at least 250k out of it. No major mechanical problems but it seems to be a deer magnet which has cost me a few bucks (Ha!)

233,000 miles and running strong. Last month, I found out the night before that I needed to drive to Billings, MT the next day. Without a worry, I hopped in my car and drove the 9 hours there, stayed the night, and drove back the next day.

I had a Chevy Tahoe that could be, for all I know, making its maiden voyage to the junkyard. It had 167k miles. The transmission was replaced twice, as well as the A/C unit once, power steering unit and a myriad of other things. In other words, it was mostly a POS. I only drove it for around 13k miles of its life and I felt like I was tempting fate if I kept it any longer. I don't know how other people seem to have luck with American cars.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Nobody was in the truck when I took the picture. Freaky.

PS: WYO looks like that every day where I live.

It's not a truck, but my '95 Suzuki swift (The Jellybean) has helped me haul the tools and supplies necessary for many a home improvement job. I bought from a grandma in a trailer park for around $3500 just 3 days after returning from my mission. She had put only 20,000 miles on it over the previous five years, but she was getting remarried, and her fiance gave her a new Jetta for an engagement present.

It now has 145k on it. I've had to replace the clutch cable (twice--i've concluded there is a design flaw in that the cable has to come at too shallow an angle through the firewall, and therefore drags across the opening) the CV joints once, and the drive axles once. Other than that it has only needed regular maintenance. I have been in five different minor accidents in the car (none of which have been my fault, thank you) and was even rear ended by a guy driving a $70,000 Mercedes, once. The 'bean suffered a split seam in the bumper. His Benz needed a new grill.

I have driven the 'bean between St. George and Ogden/SLC/Provo at least a hundred times, and have taken it on road trips to Colorado Springs, Phoenix, LA, San Diego, and San Francisco.

Some of my greatest exploits in the 'bean:

              - Proposing to Mrs. Donut
              - Opening my first law school grades (the lawyers out there know what a big deal this is the first time)
              - Driving Mrs. D to the hospital for the delivery of our first child
              - Picked up a multi-million dollar client from the airport (I'm pretty sure his luggage that I hoisted through the hatchback into the back seat was worth more than my car)
-Stopping on the side of I-15 near Fillmore when it turned 100k miles, and taking pictures while jumping up into the air, reminicent of the old Toyota commercials
              - Getting it Valet parked at the Wynn

Sadly, it appears my time with The Jellybean is drawing to an end. Our family has all but outgrown our other daily driver, and it looks like we'll be purchasing a mini van or a smallish SUV here in the next 6 months. Mrs. D will drive the new purchase, and i'll likely take over driving our other car, leaving the 'bean as the odd vehicle out. I don't know if i'll sell it (NADA value is less than $100--that's right $100) but I can't see it sitting in our driveway taking up space, either. Perhaps i'll donate it to charity.

Regardless of where it ends up, the 'bean has been a solid investement, lasting me through junior college, college, law school, and my first 3+ years of being an attorney. There are some things I won't miss about the 'bean, but there are a lost more things that I will.

Great pics. I especially like the image of D-Hole parked along side the highway, jumping in the air with his legs kicked to one side.

D-hole is also "zest-fully clean" most days of the week.

Also, sometimes my morning carpool starts driving away because I won't stop kissing Mrs. D. This is the price I pay for having fresh breath.

I know how hard it can be for you to get up on the morning. Luckily you have the fresh scent of Folger's in your cup to open your eyes. Its the best of waking up.

I like the rolling sagebrush hills and wide open nothingness of the high desert, but I realize it's an acquired taste.
