My favorite time was in May, but September was nice as well. In May, the spring runoff makes some incredible sights in the Lauterbrunnen valley as there are about a half dozen waterfalls coming off the cliffs as you go up the canyon.

Yes, this is why I am leaning toward the Spring instead of Fall. And I would prefer to have less crowds, but perhaps it's always crowded.

Switzerland will be less crowded in the spring, especially late April to late May. If you go late May to mid June there will be more tourists but not like summer.
