"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

            • This is from a guy who is my favorite right-wing regurgitator. Former freshman roomie at Dixie who is DAF. About 4 years ago he deleted me as a fb friend and sent a message saying the reason he was doing it was because "I don't think we see the world the same way". Mainly because I would poke and prod at his mindless anti-Obama rhetoric. About 6 months ago he friend requested me. I was actually encouraged to see him question Trump, even openly railing against him and making a case for a McMullin vote. About 3 days before the election, he declared that a vote for McMullin would be a vote for Hillary, and said he was left with no choice but to vote Trump. I made a post explaining how Hillary would have to win Utah to make a vote for McMullin matter, and he didn't respond.

Well, as soon as Trump was elected, he promptly declared him his candidate, offering some dumb explanation as to why he didn't embrace him sooner. Today he posts this:

I'm pretty sure he botched the landing, but I guess I'm not sure? I love the hashtags, though.

              • I hate the idea of a flag-burning amendment. I've actually burned a couple of flags (part of a scout ceremony retiring the colors) which Trump and other amendment-supporters would support. Yet if a protestor burned a flag while standing next to me while I burn mine, he/she would go to prison while I'm praised? So instead of actions, we're going to punish thoughts?

Also, has there been an epidemic of flag-burning throughout the land? Does anyone believe an amendment will reduce flag-burning? I'd expect an amendment to result in an increase in flags being torched. So what is it Trump and others really want here, other than to make cheap political points?

The flag-burning brouhaha has to be one of the dumbest political arguments of our lifetime, yet it seems to resonate strongly with a small but vocal faction of the right. Hasn't this been to the supreme court, twice? And struck down with the help of some of the favorite conservative superhero justices? Do we really want to go down the path of prosecuting convictions?

                      Yes.

I was about to post "But there is no way America would support such a stupid amendment" and then I recalled what just happened in the presidential election.

                      • Also-- that hugging the flag shit. Has there ever been such a thing that contrived in the history of U.S. politics? Do you think Trump ever did that once in his life? I'm sure he's made snow angels in money, but the stupid flag has probably been the furthest thing from his mind. I wonder which of his vaunted advisors told him to do that and how the conversation went.

I think I could maybe sort out the riddle if I only knew who "those who matter most" are.
