Guitar players: how do you finger an A?

I can play the open including getting the high E to ring out. For some reason my finger developed the ability to do it. I'm with you on the higher action guitars. I have to use three fingers for that open.

I tried to get the high E to ring using just the index finger tonight. I can do it but the B string gets muted.

that was my experience too. Index finger doesnt work for me.

3 fingers. Makes transitions to the 7, m7 and maj.7 easier, as well as the common variations of E.

Well, none of these are written in stone, I guess. I was sort of thinking about the chord as a stand alone. Your point that what comes next or came just before is important is a good one.
