  • Guitar players: how do you finger an A?

When playing an open A do you use one, two or three fingers? I usually use two.

When playing a barré A what do you use? I use barre and two unless it is just big and slow playing then I use barre and my ring finger.

    How bad is that technique?
    PLesa excuse the tpyos.

How do you play an A with 2 fingers?

Lay two finger tips across three strings for an open A

For a barre I will do the barre and then lay my ring finger across all three strings without hitting the E string.

I assume one finger is one string, and the other figure is on two strings.

For open, I alternate between 1 and 3. For barre, I use a barre and ring finger.

I don't consider myself an accomplished guitar player by any means. I basically know a few campfire songs and that's about it, but here's my answer anyways.

For a typical A chord I use three fingers with the index, middle, and ring on the D, G, B strings respectively (not the greatest technique, I know, but it's what comes natural to me, and I have small hands).

For a barre chord, I use my ring, pinky, and middle fingers on the A,D,G strings respectively. I have tried barring the A and D strings with just my ring finger, but that doesn't always work that well for two reasons; I don't play often enough to have developed the strength to sustain that position for long, and my finger tip doesn't cover both strings really well unless I press hard and flatten it, which mutes the G string unless I have it positioned perfectly.

I think you should just do what works best for you while giving you the best sound. I have studied vocal technique more than instrumental, but I believe that there are relationships between the two. IMO, the primary reason to practice proper technique is to maximize the relationship between effort to produce a quality sound and the sustainability of that sound. By this I mean that even though improper technique may come more naturally, with seemingly less effort, the actual mechanics employed may either limit your range or your endurance, for lack of a better term. I think that principle applies to all instruments in one way or another.

Re: Guitar players: how do you finger an A?

Depends on the guitar and the tone I'm after. I have fat fingers so if i need the high E string to ring, i use my pinky, ring, and middle fingers on the 2, 3, 4, strings. Otherwise i just use my pointer finger and mute the high E. My thumb always mutes the low E.

Btw, really no such thing as bad technique (unless you are in to shredding). Everyone has different fingers and hands and different guitars require different "techniques" to accomplish the same thing.
