  • New phone advice

I'm afraid my Droid X has given up the ghost. (Just in case any of you have any ideas--When i turn it on, it freezes on the Motorola signal. I've tried to hard reset with both the volume button and the home button with the power button, but it never shows me the Android guy, but instead gives me the Motorola sign and freezes again. Unfortunately, it's out of warranty. I'd really not like to get a new phone yet, so I'm open to ideas.)

Anyway, assuming my phone is truly gone, I'm a little stuck. My contract is done and I'm due for a new phone, but I was hoping my old one would last until the new iPhone came out and I could check it out. I'm not an Apple guy, but I've enjoyed my iPad much more than my Droid, as far as functionality and ease of use is concerned. I really just want a phone that works and is easy to use--I really don't care about custom ROMs. So, my questions:
    1) For those who have had both, is iPhone really smoother and more reliable than Android phones? My iPad sure is. Or is it just the Apple cult talking it up?
    2) I could just buy a cheap reliable used/new Droid phone for say $50-100 that would last me 6 months until the new iPhone came out. Any recommendations? Again, I don't care about bells and whistles--I just want it to work reliably and not be crazy slow (like my Droid X had gotten--maybe too many apps, I don't know).
    3) Should I just get a new iPhone and then upgrade in two years to the 6 or whatever's out then? Or is the 4 getting a little...long in the tooth?
Any other ideas? Maybe just a cheap pay-as-you-go phone and use my iPad for smartphone stuff? Anyone doing this now?
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I would just buy a cheaper droid and wait until new iphone. The only real advantage of iphone is apps, and sometimes a more refined system, but it is not a desperate need in a phone.

I greatly prefer the iPhone to any android I've ever used. With the rumored larger screen I think it's worth it to wait for the new one. Have you considered trying to find a used iPhone?

I prefer the iPhone to Android phones as well. I've only played with a couple of models, but from what I've seen, I think the iPhone just works better and operates more smoothly. I guess that's what happens when everyone else is trying to catch up. As for waiting or buying now, I believe (subject to a possible correction from Uncle Ted) that most of the improvement in the iPhone 5 will be software related. The new phone will have a larger screen and be slightly thinner, but the 4S will run the same new software features that will be introduced with iOS 6. If having a larger screen and a thinner phone isn't as important to you, you could probably get a 4S and have the benefits of iOS 6.
        Not that, sickos.

Love the iPhone. I have no regrets, and I haven't met anyone who switched from Android to iPhone who regrets it. But I'm not sure about your timing. Does anyone know a firm date when the iPhone 5 comes out?

If you can't wait and want to make the switch now, the 4S is still a very good phone.

I have an old 3GS. How much of an improvement does 4S really represent?

Depends what you need and how you use it. In my household we have a 4 (me) a 4S (my wife), and two 3GSs (19 and 17 year olds). One of the 3GS phones used to be mine.

The 4S has the retina display, which is defintely nice, especially if you have old eyes like me, but is not, IMO enough to justify getting a whole new phone.

I think the 4S has a faster chip, but I don't notice a huge difference there.

You can do facetime on the 4S, which my youngest daughter really likes.

The 4S has Siri, which we don't use at all.

The camera is much better on the 4S. Since at this point 90% of the pictures and 100% of the videos we take are with are phones, that is actually a fairly big deal to us.

Also, with the 3GS you are probably going to soon have a phone that can't handle the latest software updates, which can be a big deal.

I'm having the same issue. I'm trying to nurse my EVO to the release of the next iPhone. I'm not sure it's going to make it.

The iPhone 5 will have 4G and a bigger screen. Get a used Droid phone to tide you over.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Got my Galaxy SIII today. I have no need to wait for the iPhone 5. I'll also believe it when I see it that the iPhone 5 will have a larger screen. The iPhone 4S was also supposed to have a larger screen. I'm still amazed that the iPhone 4S somehow came out without 4G, without at least a 1 gig of RAM, and with a 3.5 inch screen.

My advice, just go get the GSIII.

Yeah, I agree with this caveat. IOS would have to be a helluva lot easier to use to make up for the tiny screen on those phones (but at least they have that enormous home button). The iPhone 4S's inclusion of only 3G was totally confusing to me given that 4G was already widely available when it was released.

My thought is that the iPhone would be even more successful if it included at least a 4 inch screen. 4G is a given with the new iteration. But that doesn't mean that Apple's going to do it.

If you go Droid, go Samsung. HTC seems to be unreliable and apparently so is Motorola.

My 18 month old just submerged my new iPhone 4S in the toilet. It was submerged for a while. I've got it in some rice right now, but I won't know for 24-48 hours if it's okay. I have two issues now that I have to address:

                        1. I need a cell phone for work ASAP. I can probably get by until tomorrow night, and I was toying with the idea of getting an unlocked phone from Amazon, getting it set up on Verizon, and proceeding from there. Bottom line: I need a working phone by Wednesday morning.

If my iPhone survives (I'm not optimistic) then I'll keep it, and give my wife whatever I get on Amazon (she needs a new phone anyways). If not, I keep the Amazon phone and we try to get the iPhone repaired.

                        2. Is it possible to add an unlocked phone to my Verizon account?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I am totally screwed. I'll lose all my contacts too probably.

                        Ugh.

I use Siri often when I drive. She can look up numbers for me, send texts, etc. Sometimes she is a little flaky though. And she can be a little cheeky, too.

Last night there was a thunderstorm and I heard the rain outside and I wish I could have asked Siri if it was raining.
