When it comes to fonts, I'm pretty much a TNR or Arial guy. Nothing too dazzling. Sometimes I'll use an obnoxious font in an email to a co-worker, but the timing and content have to be right. If you'd like to try this, I recommend Harlow Solid Italic, Mistral or Jokerman. One font I would like to see gain traction is Garamond. Now that really is a nice looking font.
    I agree on garamond

I like calibri for documents and verdana for e-mail. I am not into the whole serif thing.

Serifs have their purpose. There is a reason why you almost never see books printed in Sans-Serif fonts. Printed body copy is almost exclusively done with Serifs. Usually only headlines, subheads titles and captions are done in Sans-Serif fonts. I am trying to remember correctly, but when reading large blocks of copy, it has been shown that you read better with the Serifs as they connect the letters together. If my memory is serving me right, however, the rules change slightly when using a font for web/computer use. Sans-Serif fonts are considered acceptable for most computer-only use.

For those who don't know what the hell we are talking about, fonts with Serifs are those that include the tails off of the letters. Like:

Sans Serifs are those that are without Serif (obviously).

Comic sans, the domain of every amatuer out there. I see comic sans and I immediately know that whoever was responsible for chosing the typeface is clearly not a professional.

There is a sign on I-15 heading down to Utah county that says something to the effect of, "Don't spring the porn trap". Comic sans makes the message insufferable and a complete joke. That is, of course, only the beginning of what is wrong with that billboard. To think that someone wasted so much money on that. Comic sans, good grief.

I have to read so many papers that my eyes tire easily....I require courier new for all papers. It's much easier to read.

I used to be partial to Goudy Old, but that has since waned.

Also, while we are hating on typefaces can I please throw papyrus in the mix? This seems to be the default for every mom and pop day spa that opens, along with a bunch of other businesses that seem to think that things like type don't matter.

Garamond is great. In fact, one place I worked switched to Garamond as their official office font (I don't know why they needed an official one, but they thought they did).

Since I originally posted this, I have now hate Garamond. Too smashed.

We must use Calibri 11 on every document we generate. Letter, emails, everything. It drives me batty. Also I imagine that some of our clients dont have it, so their computer is swapping it out anyway.

Well I'm boring, because I like Helvetica. I'm especially digging Helvetica Neue.

It is the default font for MS Office 2007.

I must have missed this one the first time around. There are many other fonts that are much more inappropriate than Comic Sans that I often see. Some people seem to think that if the computer has 100 fonts, they should use most of them. I try to stick with Helvetica (Ariel for Microsoft stuff), Times, and Courier (computer stuff only) when choosing a font.

However, back in the olden days before there were personal computers, my parents had a typewriter that was proportionally spaced, used a Copperplate Gothic font, and had a carbon ribbon (always black). Papers typed on that typewriter automatically got half a grade higher than the same thing typed on the typical Courier font typewriter with an old cloth ribbon. That font is rarely appropriate for anything, but I have fond memories of it.

That's what I used whenever possible in college. If the teacher didn't specify which font had to be used, courier new was the best. The type is so much larger than TNR, it took less BSing to get to the page requirement.
