Last week, a good friend of my son's attempted suicide. He is 15 (so is my son). This kid is happy, upbeat, popular, good-looking, athletic. He was with me and my kids at dinner a few hours before his attempt and seemed to be in great spirits. Then later that night, he put a knife in his arm. He is currently in a lock-down facility. Not even his 6 younger siblings know that he tried to take his life (well, maybe the second-oldest knows). My son adamantly refused to believe it when I asked him about it. It just makes no sense.

It may be that he had just made the decision to take his life, and having that decision made brought him a temporary feeling of peace and happiness, as messed up as that sounds.

I went to a suicide prevention training and one of the issues they talked about was that it is more and more common for the popular, smart, athletic, high achievers to attempt suicide. They blamed it on the "everyone gets a trophy" mentality that we've embraced over the last few years.

These kids are used to always winning, being the most athletic, getting straight A's, etc. They've never learned how to deal with getting bad grades or losing in sports. So when they face adversity and failure, they are completely unprepared to handle it. They are emotionally unable to make sense of things and regulate their emotions - and they make a dumb impulsive decision.

Not saying that's what happened in this case - just that it isn't uncommon for the popular, athletic, smart kids to attempt suicide. It isn't just the outsider misfits anymore.

Did you see the recent stats from Utah? 87% successful suicide when a firearm is used. I have a patient who is one of the 13%. Beautiful girl who miraculously missed her femoral artery but blew up her femur. Just heartbreaking.

just curious - you said he was with you and your son at dinner - where was this dinner? had you invited him to your house? a school thing? his house? i want to be very clear in saying i'm not implying anything or trying to get at anything. sincerely only curious for curiosity's sake.

That's bullshit. People who want to end their lives do not want trophies. They just want a way to find joy in life, and are frustrated by the impossibility of it.

don't you think that perhaps in their journey to find joy in life, part of that frustration comes from them seeing themselves as failures when they get that C in math or failing to break an 11 second 100m? don't you think that might be a possibility in the case of a few kids? possible? in at least some cases? or do you know the psyche of EVERY kid out there who as ever contemplated suicide?

Awful. Kids are impulsive — I think a lot of times kids who commit suicide are not even depressed, just highly frustrated for a brief time period and totally impulsive. That’s where if they try to start the car in a garage or take pills they often will fail the suicide attempt. But they don’t fail if they can get a gun. That’s where just too damn many guns results in death and is way more of a problem in a place like Utah than police shootings or school/mass shootings.

I knew a kid growing up who committed suicide after his parents caught him smoking.

This kid was not joyless or depressed, just angry and impulsive and comfortable with guns.
