  • Official "What was I thinking when I agreed to this?!" Thread

Thursday I'm having my wisdom teeth taken out... without being put under. I'm happy enough that I've finally found a dentist willing to take them out (my previous two dentists refused to do it -- said I didn't need it so they wouldn't do it. My teeth are starting to move a bit, though, so I want them out), but the fact that he's not a surgeon means he's just going to numb me up and pull them out. All four teeth are in just fine, and he suggests that they should come right on out without any difficult, but even with the numbing I'm not looking forward to sitting there having to LISTEN to it happen. My wife recommends headphones and loud music, so I think I'll do that.

I suppose I could go to an oral surgeon, but I'm getting to the end of my max annual payout for my dental insurance and I need to get this work done before I have some more work done once the new plan year starts in April. It'll cost me an extra $1000 out-of-pocket to go to a surgeon. Call me a cheapskate, but I figure I'd rather just save the money, have an hour of discomfort while the procedure is done, and then take a vacation with the savings next month.

Anybody willing to share positive or negative wisdom teeth pulling experiences?

Should have opted to go under. It's worth it.

Going under is always the right call with wisdom teeth. My brother didn't go under and he still regrets it to this day.

I had them yanked without being put to sleep. I survived without any lasting emotional scars.

I'm the only person in my family to do general and also the only person not to break into a cold sweat if "wisdom" and "tooth" are used in the same sentence. It makes a huge difference.

            But is it worth $1000?

I had my wisdom teeth taken out without being put under. It didn't seem like a big deal. Of course, it was in my mid 30's and so they weren't impacted or anything. My dentist told me that I needed to get the cavities filled in them (and maybe a cap on one) or she would just yank them out for me for the same price. I told her to just yank them out. She gave me the locals and pulled them. I remembered the shots hurting more.

I didn't go under and "all of my wisdom teeth were okay, should be an easy one." I did break into a cold sweat after they realized that one was impacted and started chipping away at my jaw bone. They gave me a hit of oxygen a few times and that was fantastic. Your wife is spot in with the sound but you still feel the pressure before your tooth snaps into pieces. All that said, I still wouldn't of been put under. I just hate not knowing what is going on around me.

The worse part for me was the recovery, not the procedure. My mouth wouldn't stop bleeding for 2-3 days and my cheek was swollen past my ear on the side that my tooth was impacted. I didn't think that my mouth was ever going to heal.

I had one pulled at age 11 and three removed surgically at 19. The three were impacted. The one that was pulled was much much easier to recover from. The impacted ones left me bleeding from my mouth for 2 days, and I couldn't open it but about a third of normal for a couple of weeks.

My father inlaws is a cosmetic dentist. He does wisdom teeth without putting patients under all the time. In fact I got to watch him do my wife's. It was pretty cool to watch.

I had the same thing happen. I had an abscess so the anesthetic wasnt that strong. I literrally had a drenched through shirt. One of the worst experiences of my life.

Any recommendations for good foods to eat while recovering? I know about pudding, jello, ice cream, etc. Any other surprising items that worked well for you guys?
