Summer 2012 Family Vacations

Im thinking of taking the family to NYC or Orlando for a vacation this year. This thread is dedicated to the summer 2012 summer vacations of cuffers. Ask questions, answer questions, brag, complain, etc.

In NYC, there is tons of touristy things to do. I've thought about flying into buffalo and hitting the falls, then seeing palmyra etc over the first few days. I'd stop in Syracuse and visit the old stomping grounds and then drive to NYC , rent a apt/condo for 5 nights and take the kids to see all the touristy stuff and hit the lion king and Mary poppins - shows that the kids would like.

As for Orlando, there are some smoking hot deals on tix and hotels. My kids aren't huge roller coaster fans so I don't know how much of these places will be a waste for them waiting while my oldest and I ride the good stuff.

Also have thought of philly, DC and Gettysburg and Williamsburg.

My kids will be spending a few weeks in NYC with their grandma. Thats about it. My wife is using all her vacation time attending conferences for her schooling.

My sister is getting re-married on my mom's property in Maine. We're excited for several reasons: my kids have never been to Maine in the summer; my Mom is selling her house/acreage next summer, so this will be the last time we get to spend time in the house I grew up in; this time, my sister is marrying a man who is not attracted to men.

We have a couple of cabins on a nearby lake, and plan to have a bit of a reunion there after the ceremony. It should be awesome.

Thinking about hauling the fam up to Oregon. I really enjoyed my visit in the fall, and I want to see what it's like in the summer.

Summers in NYC. Reminds me of growing up. Lots of mischief and fun with cousins. But miserable heat and humidity. The last summer vacation I took there was several years ago when Kobayashi set his first record at the Nathans competition over Fourth of July weekend. That was fun to see. Unfortunately, we hated the heat and vowed never to return there in the summer. Now when we go it is Fall or Spring and the weather is under control.

Ireland. A week in a seaside cottage and then several days in a hotel in Dublin.

I've recommended this to multiple people with good success.

Get a hotel in Stamford Connecticut and take the train in and out everyday to the city. You can buy an off-peak pass for a week and do quite well. Being in Stamford is nice, because it is far enough away to get reduced hotel fares, but close enough to have a major hub for the metro north. You can get a train at all hours.

I guess if you want to rent a condo, look at other places because that area is SUPER expensive for housing.

I've lived in a lot of states, and Western OR/WA have the best summers anywhere. Not too humid, nice, moderate temperature. You'll love it (and I'm extremely jealous).

You could have just hit the beach down from Nathans.

ha. brooklyn beaches. everyone crams onto the sand and half the people are only ankle deep because most of them don't know how to swim. Also, lots of cutoff denim jeans as bathing suits.
