                  • What's the haps on the X-mas eve festivities? I'm bored out of my skull at the in-laws. Kids running around everywhere making noise, about 10 adults packed into the house. And we are all here because my MIL wants the grand kids to act out Luke 2. Seems like a lot of work for a 5 minute play. I offered to start the fire in the fireplace, so that was fun breaking wood up into bits and playing with matches,

I'd rather get going home so we can start on our pizza, wrap the final gifts, and chill out.

I wish my wife would not bow to the pressure to gather at someone else's home. I like just doing our own thing.

Amen! Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home for the holidays.

I fight this every year, and lose out to there being peace. I would much rather be creating my own family traditions than reliving those of our childhood.

Got a call from Alta today so I'm heading in to work to fix a hip fracture. If I time it right I'll miss the gathering at the neighbor's with spontaneous displays of musical talent and show up in time for dessert.

                          • For 34 years my family has gotten together and made Ukrainian food in honor of our heritage. I have missed the past few years, of course, because of distance. Plus I hate the food's taste and have for years (part of the tradition was me getting a burger on the way).

My Ukrainian grandmother died last year, so I'm not sure who is doing it this year, but we've decided to carry on the tradition in texas with an ethnic cuisine I find palatable. So we have a big pot of curry simmering on the stove and rice in the rice cooker. Henceforth Japanese food is our Christmas Eve tradition.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

                            • My mother's parents are first generation from Germany.

As such, Christmas Eve has always been a huge deal. It's pretty formal, like Thanksgiving but with all the decorations and trappings of Christmas. Fine china, etc.

Growing up, and even now, I've alway felt like Christmas really started at around mid-afternoon on Christmas Eve and was over by about noon on Christmas day.

Whenever dinner has been at my parents, my father goes to a local seafood distributor and picks up a ton of shrimp. He cooks, cleans and peels them all. Shrimp cocktails for everyone.

Occasionally, such as last year and this one, we are having lobster tails, too.

Santa Claus makes a visit. The kids get to sit on his lap and tell him what they would like. He leaves them a small gift and reminds them to go to bed early.

Growing up, my parents would always buy us new "Sunday" clothes. The boys would generally get suits and the girls would get nice dresses. We would then wear them on Christmas Eve.

We had gotten away from that, but I decided I wanted to get the older two boys some nice dress clothes so we are taking up that tradition this evening.

To me, Christmas Eve has always seemed like a bigger deal than Christmas morning. It was more focused on family, solemnity and the moment than the ensuing chaos the next morning.

                              Merry Christmas, everyone!

                              • The last few years have been great - just our immediate family at home for a nice dinner (beef wellington) then a reading of Luke 2, making some treats to leave out for Santa, opening one gift (pajamas), and heading off to bed.

This year my BIL is visiting the in-laws so we will have Christmas Eve dinner together there. It will be a nice affair as my MIL has a flair for decorating and table setting but the dinner will most likely be ham

She has a children's book about snowmen that come alive at night that she likes to read to the grandchildren, and then we'll try to slip away with enough time left to read our Christmas story and open our pajamas - we made chocolate chip cookies yesterday and saved some for Santa.
