  • X-mas 2011

    All things X-mas this season.

    1. Wal Mart is having a nice Black Friday sale on games....Gears 3, Battlefield 3, Batman, and others....$28! Also, misc console deals. The nice thing about this deal is that you don't have to go at 2AM. The sale starts on Thanksgiving Day at 10PM.

    2. Has anyone used one of those x-mas lights services? I see signs for them here and there and so I decided to call and get a quote. Ridiculous. To wrap some trees in the front yard....almost $600! I'm not talking massive Forrest Gump trees, just average sized 10-12 footers. And that quote doesn't include the house.

    3. The 'Co has good deals on Lego kits, although I had promised myself that I wasn't ever going to buy another Lego kit again.

Walmart has a Samsung Plasma for $498 on Black Friday as well as a 42 inch Vizio LED, 3d Wifi HDTV for $598. Both excellent deals.

I let my wife and kids talk me into stringing lights on the house this year. I will play on their guilt endlessly when I fall from a ladder and end up in surgery as several of my neighbors have done over the past couple of years.

Where do you get good outdoor lights that line up straight without all pointing in different directions? Yes, I'm an engineer.

They also need to be green and white.

Please, please, please pay someone to hang your lights. We've already had our first light-hanging accident this year - fracture/dislocations of both wrists. If your family persists ask them if, in addition to the guilt trip, they are OK feeding you and wiping your butt for the next 6-8 weeks while your fractures heal.

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, in other words, the start of X-mas 2011.

My wife didnt even try because she knew it would be a non starter for me. ladders, steep roof, lots of work on a Saturday, freezing cold outside, college football on TV......not happening.

But I was shocked at how expensive these services can be when they start adding up all the stuff.

Green and white X-mas lights? Go TOHS Lancers!

I guess X-mas 2011 in title could mean many things (Not just shopping stuff). So maybe you want it to be more broad..

I was actually looking for black Friday stuff today and came across this same stuff about Walmart. I was glad to see someone started a thread on this so we can share the deals we find.. I think we did that last year...

I heard a story on npr about shopping walls. Basically it's pictures of toys and other gift items in the subway, movie theater, or other places where you have time to kill. At the corner of the picture is one of those black and white boxes for smart phones. Take the picture and you go straight to a website where you can buy the item. Has anyone seen these? It actually sounds like a great idea. Too bad I don't have a smart phone.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

Do they also come back to take them down? If they included wrapping Christmas presents for the kiddds, you might want to consider it...

Look at Space Gohst's avatar; it is an example of one.

One of my partners rented a boom lift a couple of years ago to get lights up on some trees and his higher than normal roof line. He came away saying it was well worth it just to play with the boom lift for an afternoon.

They are a lot of fun. I represent a company that makes them and I always enjoy prodcut inspections. Sadly, they will not arrange for me to get a good deal on a rental.
