    ill

Anyone else sick this week? I think I may have strep throat but not sure. I've never had it before. My throat is in major pain so I'm going to the doctors office today. I guess they can do a test right there? I feel lousy though. I'm achy and tired, hungry but can't eat, and my throat is in pain.

One nice thing about being ill....I laid in bed last night watching TV. I wound up watching several episodes of The Golden Girls on We channel.

I am staying home today for the same reason, my throat is on fire.

I've had strep a few times - yes they should be able to tell you right there if you have it so you can get on the penicillin or whatever it is they decide to prescribe.

How long does it take for the pain to subside once you start taking the meds? I literally can't eat anything. It is too difficult to swallow stuff. This is probably the worst sore throat I've ever had.

The last time I had it was about a year ago - that was the first time in probably ten years - the pain lasted about 7-8 days. It was brutal. FWIW, I don't think that is normal, but I have heard the older you get the worse your case of strep is. I don't know if that's a myth or not, but it sure as hell rang true in my case. IIRC, when my daughter had it about the same time, it was gone in 2-3 days.

I'm very sorry to hear that. I had a nasty case of strep a couple years ago. Doc prescribed a Z Pack and it was gone within a couple of days.

My oldest daughter is starting to get sick, which means we'll start the fall/winter looping cycle of various illnesses.

In my experience there has been substantial relief from the pain within 24 hours of starting amoxicillin or whatever antibiotics you get.

That said, you know that goatnapper would tell all of you to pull the string about now don't you? I would be careful discussing your pain when you see him online.

I only have had strep once, but once I got the antibiotics, relief was very quick. Within a day I was feeling much better.

                    Ask for Decadron.
It's much more effective at relieving your symptoms than antibiotics. In fact, Penicillin will shorten the course of your sore throat by about, oh...6 hours? We don't write for penicillin to treat strep throat.

I had a very severe (at least, I think) case of strep my freshman year at BYU. I missed a full week of classes (plus two weekends) and I couldn't eat anything but smoothies for most of it.

I knew it was strep so I went to the doctor early and got some antibiotics, but they did nothing for the first 4 days or so. I went back and got something stronger and it was gone in 2-3 days after that.

I probably lost 20 pounds, which is a lot on a guy that only weighed 165 in the first place. Good bye freshman 15!

I'm not sure that it was drug resistant. Didn't you just say that penicillin only reduces the duration of strep by 6 hours? I understand that was hyperbole, but I imagine the sentiment was serious.

I guess it could have been mono (no one ever told me that it was), but I didn't have any recurring effects the rest of that year, or ever, really.

I like that your first thought is not strep, but falafel was kissing too many RMs. I concur.
