Kindle meet Fire

Thought I'd start this thread so DDD can call it the latest Palmetto.

Looks and sounds pretty sweet. Great price point at $199. I like the syncing to Amazon's cloud. iPad has a legit competitor now.

Two things that are interesting about the fire:

(1) The unlimited cloud storage. Is it really unlimited? I have a lot of PDFs, movies, and other crap. It may be time to create an app for android that will backup my entire laptop to Amazon's cloud.

(2) The Amazon Silk web browser. Off-loading to the Amazon EC2 may be a good idea unless it gets overloaded and/or the network path is slower to it than the web site you are trying to go to. There are some 3rd party browser apps for the iPad/iPhone that do this (off-load rendering to a "cloud"). It seems there are some issues with caching with the one I tried. It will be interesting to see if this browser has the same sort of issues.

I think the unlimited only pertains to purchases from Amazon. I could be wrong on that. I too am interested in the Silk browser.

Kindle Fire - Full Color Kindle with 7" Multi-Touch Display, Wi-Fi

This could be an interesting device. I'm not a huge fan of the 7" tablet size, but I know a lot of people are because they are much more portable than the 10" ones. Rumors are that Amazon will be putting out a larger device later this year and that it will sport a quad core processor. I'll bet it comes in at about $300.

Certainly this new tablet was not meant to compete head-to-head with the ipad, nor will it ever do that.

But it certainly has the potential to secure the lower end of the market that Apple hasn't cared about yet - people who want a basic, quality tablet that can do most things but that doesn't cost as much as (or more than) a full-sized PC. That portion of the market hasn't even been tapped yet. Take a look at the massive demand for the discounted HP Palmetto Touchpad. People want a decent device at this price point.

Can I access the internet anywhere I want with this device, or only in places that offer free wi-fi? I would guess only places I can access free wi-fi. There would have to be some sort of a recurring service plan to have access to the internet anywhere, right?

Only on wifi. As of now, there's not plan to add any 3g connectivity to this device. Perhaps to the next one that comes out?

Is This Really the Tablet Everyone’s Talking About?

WIRED A great platform for casual video playback. A perfectly fine Android 2.3 app device. A price that pleads “buy me,” repeatedly, until you crack a big grin, and give in like a good-natured father buying trinkets for the kids at Wal-Mart.

TIRED Small screen size and insufficient processing power. Crap browser performance. Near useless as a magazine reader, and roundly trumped by superb e-ink Kindles as a book reader.

Meh.

My wife wanted on of these but it is being hammered in reviews. The only positive I have seen is the price.
