I have been thinking a lot about the things that I do that bring me a lot of joy, despite not being grand or amazing feats. As I think back on this year I have been fortunate to have some experiences that are momentous, however those kind of things only come around on occasion and are often things that are out of our control.

I find that there are, however many small things that make me happy and are entirely within my control. I am trying to focus on doing those things more, hopefully thereby finding more happiness.

One of these things for me is pressure washing my driveway/patios. About 2-3 times a year I rent a pressure washer and spray everything down, creating a huge pile of dirt in the street. For 2-3 weeks following our cement looks great, this very light shade of grey and playing basketball with the kids doesn't leave your hands so dirty you look like a hobo. This week I decided to break down and buy a pressure washer, after looking at how much they cost I could have easily bought one with rental fees spent over the last 5+ years. I then spent most of yesterday afternoon and evening spraying to my heart's content.

As trivial as this sounds, I love the tangible recognition for the time I spent doing something. I'm not trying to brag about my pressure washing skills, which I am sure are in the elite percentage, rather to find out what things bring other people a smile and maybe expand my horizons.

I love making pickles, jams, and jellies. Something about a day spent canning makes me happy.

I've been to Eugene, no matter how dirty your hands get from playing basketball you look nothing like a Eugene hobo.

Kicking giant mushrooms that show up after rains with my kids. I love that. Don't ask me why.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

I always wait until nightfall to water my garden. After I'm done watering I sit on the porch swing to look at the stars and lightning bugs. Sometimes I grab a basil leaf and pull it apart to get that great smell on my hands. It's also fun to get the bug zapper and kill whatever is flying around.

After crawling around in the dust all afternoon running speaker wire, mounting brackets, digging for HDMI cables and male-to-female converters, and programming remotes, you sit back on the couch and punch the turn-it-all-on button, and everything springs to life in glorious 5.3 surround HD.

If this event occurs shortly before the fall season, and your favorite team will be on ESPN for the next 3 months, even better.

I may be small, but I'm slow.

Unfortunately I'm way past that stage.

Mowing the lawn on a ZTR mower. I get done with my lawn and I sit back from the street and admire (while still sitting on the mower) and then I smile and go mow my dads 3 acres!

My all-time favorite is chasing lightning bugs with the kids in the back yard.

I can't tell if this is a thread about simple pleasures or one in which we brag about our occasional run-ins with semi-manual labor.
