Also, is that Mormon Shart pic making every other post appear to be tiny or is it just my view?
Must be your view. I don't have a problem.

I'm a little surprised that aerial fireworks are legal in Utah. Sometimes rookies don't set them up correctly and they fall down, shooting fireballs here and there, causing fires.

No fireworks allowed in my neck of the woods this year, so after Sunday School, I started to think "we have no real Fourth of July plans" (we usually hit up a parade in the morning, rest, then meet up with a few friends for fireworks). So, in Priesthood I announced that we were having a BBQ for anyone who wants to come at my place at 5pm on the Fourth. We had about 20 adults and 45 kids (who destroyed by yard and my house), but it was a blast. Spent all day smoking 6 racks of babybacks (five were excellent; I can't figure out what happened with the other....it just never softened up), 25 hamburgers and several hot dogs and smoked links, and getting ready for the festivities. It was awesome, and a great way to celebrate. We haven't really done anything like this since we bought our house last year, so it was a great way to "Christen" our place.

Where do you folks buy your 'works? I have seen bulk packages at Costco, Wal mart, and of course you can swing by your local neighborhood fireworks stand.

We picked up a bulk box at Costco. in terms of quantity, there were plenty of things to light. But in terms of variety, it was very disappointing. The box included a bunch of larger fireworks that looked like they would be impressive. They all had different names and different packaging. But upon lighting them, they all looked exactly the same. Also, there seemed to be a noticeable dearth of noisy fireworks that made whistle sounds. Zero packages of the spinning flowers, no snakes, no smoke bombs, no tanks....wtf?

I think for the 24th I might try my hand at putting together a package at the local fireworks stand, but I think that might cost a mint. Those stands are a rip off. I saw aerials there that cost $35 each. Did anyone find a good deal on aerials?

Maceys had some good deals. Drive up to Wyoming and go to the year round firework shops. They are all buy one get one free and less expensive than the ones in utah.

Fireworks in our area were crazy this year. I guess everyone was taking advantage of the new laws, but there were easily three or four times as much going off the past few nights. Our deck looks southwest across the valley and you could see them going off everywhere for miles.

Seriously? I would pay extra if the package did not have any of those whistling harpy sounding fireworks.

The only place I checked the aerials were $80 minimum.

Smiths had them for $20. One that I bought for $30 was called the Mexican Sombrero and like a Mexican sombrero it shot 12 times into the air...?

DAMN. I would have picked some up had I known. We got the crappy little ground kind, and my toddler was extremely unimpressed. I have a feeling July 24 is going to be even more gonzo than the 4th as more people are clued into this aerial is legal thing.

Racism aside, were they legit aerials? Like the kind at city fireworks shows? The kind that made a loud boom sound? There were people in our cul de sac launching bombs into the air, these were the real deal.

I didnt even think to try Smiths.

What is the deal here for the 24th? do the fireworks stay on sale for the whole month? When is it legal to light them?

No, they weren't what a fireworks expert would consider "Real" aerials but I'd say 50 ft in the air with full bloom display on each pop. The commercial grade ones that sound like a mini-howitzer when launched and go twice as high were also seen in my neighborhood but from what I understood of the laws these are still illegal.

Yes, the 24th can be as crazy and given what we just witnessed I'm sure it will be just as crazy as the 4th.
