Leaving Charlie overnight for the first time (!) so that I can drive up for my brother's annual 4th-of-July bash. Excited about that.

Not looking forward to the drive, though. I hear the interstate's only reduced to one lane at four or five different spots.

I posted this in Random Thoughts but I guess it goes here.

The second of July 1776 will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great Anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty, solemnized with pomp and parade, shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of the continent to the other from this time forward, forever more. You will think me transported with enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the toil and blood and treasure that it will cost us to maintain this Declaration and support and defend these States. Yet through all the gloom, I can see the rays of ravishing light and glory. I can see that the end is worth all the means. And that posterity will triumph in that day's transaction even though we should rue it, which I trust in God we shall not.
-- John Adams, in a letter to his wife Abigail, July, 1776

(The 2nd of July, 1776 was the day that Richard Henry Lee's resolution declaring independence from Great Britain was actually adopted by the Second Continental Congress. Two days later, on the 4th, Congress adopted Jefferson's draft of the formal document, the Declaration of Independence.)

We're going to our ward's annual flag-raising ceremony and breakfast Monday (we have a group read the declaration every year - kind of surprisingly, people really like it). The barbecuing at home and probably a movie.

I backed out on a weekend at The Bellagio with friends to spend it with my family (which is really what I should be doing anyway). Right now we're at the Rec Center enjoying The 4th Polynesian style. Sunday is a street bbq (rebel LDS ward) and Monday is still up in the air (ha ha).

This came up in conversation today and I got to look really smart because I knew this from reading your post. Gracias, viejo.

My parents bought a cabin in Tabiona, UT last year. It was in rough shape and we've spent the last year getting it habitable. Anyway, it's finally done and we're spending the July 4th weekend there. Small town 4th's are pretty awesome. We started out with some GOP indoctrination, AKA Fourth of July Parade, and then got our redneck on at the Tabiona rodeo. The rest of the time spent sittin' on the porch drinking some cold ones (Grape Shasta), riding ATV's, watching the kids trip over rocks and stumps and hurt themselves, etc.

On a side note, as everyone knows, summer nights (particularly around dusk) in Utah are the absolute bomb weather-wise. Couple that with the smell of fresh cut hay in this here little valley and I'm really in heaven.

I was walking down the hall at church today before Sacrament Meeting, and could hear the organ playing. I thought that, even though it is July 3, it was kind of strange to play "This Land is Your Land" as prelude music. As I got closer, I realized that it was actually "O My Father". I never realized how close these tunes were before, especially in the second part.

We have an elder in our ward right now from Tabiona. I had never heard of it until I met him. Nice kid. He said his school was K-12 and he had 12 kids in his graduating class.

Nothing like going to church the Sunday before the 4th to answer the question of who would buy something like this.

What is the book the guy next to the soldier with the flag holding? "The Five Thousand Year...?" That seems like the kind of book I should be reading.

So I would say that the now-legal aerial fireworks are a hit in Utah.

Seemed like everyone was lighting them tonight. It was really fun for the kids to see them in every direction.

Also, is that Mormon Shart pic making every other post appear to be tiny or is it just my view?
