I will either buy the car out of town (a hassle since I'm not trading one in) or see if the local guy will match the price.
I have. When my wife's car made it clear that it was ready to retire, we scoured the internet for several weeks looking for the car that she wanted. We found several that were very similar.

The dealership in our town was unwilling to work with us on a trade, so we walked out on the finance manager after he tried putting some heavy pressure on us.

The second place is about an hour away. They were unwilling to budge on the price, even though it was priced above Edmunds, KBB and all of the other dealierships within 150 miles. We didn't even get to the point of talking trade-in with them.

We finally went with a dealership about 200 miles away that gave us a screaming deal on the sticker price and on the trade-in. We exchanged dozens of emails, discussing the condition of the car (used, 1 year old), negotiating the price, and compromising on a trade-in for her old van. We got to the point where when we walked into the dealership everything was printed up and just awaiting a test drive and a few signatures. I had a dozen comps printed off from other dealership websites just in case they tried to pull something over on us. But they never did. Good experience overall.

So even though we had to drive 200 miles to get our car, we ended up saving several thousand dollars on the negotiated price and on the trade-in. Well worth it to a cheap skate like me.

BMW, Acura, MB, Infinity, Lexus, Audi?

I find the styling of the Japanese sedans to be boring. Same with the Audi, for the most part.

MB seems to be for the older generations.

I like the looks of the BMW.

What about the 3 and 5 series?

What is the difference between the 328 and the 335?

      What does the "i" mean?

I live on the Wasatch Front. Is xDrive really necessary or do you go with the RWD?

When do the current models turn over with new redesigns?

Not the drive, the appearance. A 4s and 6s which are all that would be in my reach are not exciting to me.

It's just a matter of preference.

I don't know much about high end cars, other than what I see and read.

Lately, the look of BMW's has seemed pretty bland. I like the way they looked in the early 2000's.

Right now, I really dig the way the new Lexus GS looks. It seems to have pretty good performance, gas mileage, and reliability. I have also heard that Lexus has a very good ownership experience, e.g. if you drop it off at the dealer for service, they give you a loaner to use, etc.

Not a bad thought. Hadn't even crossed my mind.

I should have disclosed, however, that i'm leaning towards a low mileage, late model used car.

                Any thoughts on certified preowned?

I've got one of these... Didn't spend the 50k asking price, but it's one of the best rigs I've ever had. It has so many uses it's ridiculous. I've taken out the seat row behind the driver, and I just put my clubs and cart right in the side door and bunji them to the corner.
