Should I buy an iPad?

My mom turns 85 this year. I am thinking of buying her an iPad with 3G and just adding it to my wireless account. I think she will like it to keep up with her grandkids on Facebook and stuff. Does anyone have an older parent or grandparent using an iPad? If so, how do they use it? Do they like it?"If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

We all chipped in years ago to buy my grandmother a cell phone. She was in her mid 80s at that time. She is in her mid 90s now. She literally never used it. After about 2 years of paying the bill, we turned off the service (it was an add line so not expensive). The cell phone remains in her kitchen drawer where it has sat the entire time.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostMy mom turns 85 this year. No way in Hades would I buy my grandmother an iPad. I would consider getting her an android device though

How does he use it? Is he on Facebook? Email? Are there any apps he likes in particular? Does he install his own apps?Originally posted by CJF View PostMy dad just turned 70. He uses his iPad all the time.
My Mom loves genealogy. Does anyone know if there are any good genealogy apps for the iPad that works with the church's system? I took a genealogy class when I was at BYU and hated every minute of it.

Yeah, I am afraid my mom would just use the iPad as a drink coster or something. She does use a computer and reads email using a $10/mo dialup account that she connects at 28.8Kbps.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostWe all chipped in years ago to buy my grandmother a cell phone. Our ward clerk recently died at age 95. He got an iPhone at age 94 and used it all the time. Of course, he was one of the coolest guys I've ever known.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

Email, BYUtv, Gospel Library, Slingbox, internet, books are probably the main uses. He is the GD teacher and his iPad is a big part of his prep and lesson. Not app heavy, but he loves it.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostHow does he use it? Is he on Facebook? Email? Are there any apps he likes in particular? Does he install his own apps?

My dad is big into geneology. If there is an app for that, I'm sure he would like to know and would use it.A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life. - Mohammad Ali

My brother/SIL gave my mother a Kindle (entry level version) for Christmas. I spent part of the evening today helping her get is set up. I have never used a Kindle before, but I can tell you now that it may be a nice reading device, but the interface is not user-friendly at all. There is zero chance that my mother will use it (she is 81). Waste of money.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostWe all chipped in years ago to buy my grandmother a cell phone. EDIT: As a point of reference, I spent at least 20 minutes on the phone with her the other day helping her look up an article on KSL.com. Bless her heart."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

My FIL is 53 and bought his first computer yesterday. He's never even used a mouse before. He couldn't quite get the double click thing down. I was about to change the settings to one click until he finally got it about 50 clicks later.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostMy brother/SIL gave my mother a Kindle (entry level version) for Christmas. On the other hand, I just bought my wife a Kindle Fire. Very user-friendly, nice size, beautiful screen, great browser, for less than half the price of an entry level ipad. She loves it.At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Second that. My daughter got a Fire for Christmas. It does everything she wants it to do, plus she can get free movies/TV via my Prime subscription. The screen is actually quite nice. I think it's a steal for 200, when compared to the iPad. Having said that, I'm writing this on an iPad.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostI agree with you on the basic Kindle.

It actually costs amazon more than $200 to make the device.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View PostSecond that. My daughter got a Fire for Christmas.
