Life is too short to work at a job you hate. Right now my oldest seems like she's headed into event planning--I don't say that lightly. She is an organizer and idea person, a total and true artist, and I think she's going to be very happy if she uses her creativity. Now, in my house, grad school is required, so she can do whatever makes her happy, after her graduate training.Originally posted by statman View PostHappy don't pay their bills. Or my bills when I'm retired and living with them...
My boy is only four, so it's too soon to tell, but he is taking to math very very quickly. I see science or engineering being what he likes to do. He is obsessed with building blocks, digging holes, and drawing things that he wants to build. I wanted to be a paleontologist at his age, but I did go the professor route. We'll see.
My baby has been able to speak in full, complex with-clauses, sentences since before she turned two. She has a massive vocabulary for 30 months (I've done some research), and she shows signs of being brilliant. She's already devious, pulling pranks on her unsuspecting brother and sister (e.g. the boy freaks if you touch his blocks. They're watching TV, she goes and grabs one of his blocks when he's looking at the screen, puts it next to the oldest, and then goes and taps him and points at the block; he freaks out, and her eyes sparkle like a little demon, while I stare in amazement. She did this at 23 months).
Of course, who the hell knows what they'll become. Parents always think their kids are geniuses (mine were right--my little sister is off the charts), but time will hone them into the best at whatever they want to become. The rule in my house is this: If you do your best at something, even if you fail, hold your head up because you did your best. If you didn't do your best, no sympathy (although I will give them some empathy).
If I had to pick careers though, I want a physician, a dentist, and an attorney. I hope they don't become professors."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.
The rest of us rarely bother to think about our actions." --Solon

Some days all I hope for is that my kids manage to hold a job and stay out of jail.
On other days, I see little sparks of things that could develop in the future. My oldest has been fascinated by all things science since he was a toddler. My daughter says she wants to be a boss in an office, (a pink office, specifically). My 2-year-old is the most outgoing of the three and I imagine he will excel in areas that would require a lot of interaction with others.
In any case, I am with Wuap. I will be thrilled if they all find a career path that will make them happy and be suitable to support themselves and their families (cuz I want grandkids). What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

My oldest son needs to be an engineer. He is wired just like his dad. Even tells corny, engineer type jokes. I think he would be most satisfied as an engineer.
My 9 year old son. .. he seems to love money. He probably needs to do banking or something. He is always asking how he can earn more interest on his money. He told me he doesn't dream of being a professional athlete. He dreams of owning a team of professional athletes. I hope he doesn't love money so much that he misses out on a family.
My 6 year old daughter is very nurturing and loves dance. She says she wants to be a nurse, a ballet teacher, and a mom when she grows up. All of those things match her personality.
My youngest, she says she is a doctor. When I had to take her to one of my check-ups and the doctor walked in, she said, "I am a doctor too." She may very well be a doctor too. She refers to every body part by its correct term, and is obsessed with anatomy. She loves it when someone has a boo boo, especially if there is blood.
I really don't care much as long as they are good people and have comfortable and fulfilling lives.

The first three are all studying engineering which makes their dad proud but it would nice if the others went into something else. I would like hedge a bit because I am planning to move in with one of them in my old age. One of them needs to have a nice house in a warm place on a golf course, heated year-around pool, a good looking maid, and all the sports channels on their cable TV."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.
