Absolutely it was. One of the great comics of our time who, like many, was an SNL-reject. Rather than throw in the towel, he formed his own stage show and got his own special on HBO, which was the early iteration of Pee-Wee's Playhouse. I was exactly the right age for the kids' version of that show on CBS on Saturday Mornings to absolutely murder me. I was pretty obsessed- I would record all the episodes on VHS, and went to 3rd grade Halloween dressed as Pee Wee with a pretty dead-on impression, if I do say so myself. But Pee Wee's Big Adventure was always the best iteration of the character. Big Top Pee Wee and the later Netflix special that came out a few years ago were fun, but Paul Reubens + Tim Burton = masterpiece. Oh it was also largely co-written by a comic whose name we might recognize-- Phil Hartman.
He also had some great turns in other non-comic roles, like 2001's Blow w Johnny Depp, as well as Mystery Men and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Right before the pandemic I got to meet Mr. Reubens in person and pay my respects at his touring 35th anniversary screenings/Q & A of Pee Wee's Big Adventure. He was guarded, but genuinely lit up when he met fans that really sincerely expressed their appreciation. (others asked him to sign this or that, which he did not like I'm guessing bc of the cynical practice of adding 'ebay value' to memorabilia.) One guy asked if he could give him some kind of gift card for coffee or something and he was very gracious when I thought it was a bit awkward. Anyway, the show was in March of 2020, so that was one of the last stops on the tour before it got indefinitely suspended/canceled bc of covid. You don't always get to meet celebrities that you particularly admire, but I sure feel lucky I did.

You can run from mental health - but you can't escape it.
There are only so many Ponyboy sunsets that will sustain you - and until they flicker - it's a hell of a thing to stay gold.

You can't escape it. You can only play defense and tell yourself that there are still miles to go.Originally posted by clackamascoug View Post

she lost her battle with mental health. yeah, that sounds like a nice way of saying she killed herself.

Unknown causes, but the linked article is basically "We are going to say she committed suicide 6 times without actually saying it."
