But the protection assignments are really short compared to the entirety of a career, aren't they? When they came to our school, they said the basic career was something like 3-4 years in a field office, 4-5 years as protection, then back into a field office at some increased rank basically for the rest of however long you work for them.

Does your dad work for the SS? Or are you just talking about working for a federal agency in general?
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I was talking about the SS. And that was just anecdotal experience of the two SS agents I know. My dad is FBI and the second part of that post pertained to federal agencies in general. Sorry about the confusion.

Mine was sponsored by the Utah health department, not the school. I applied and won out over about 40 other candidates(you had to be a utah resident, not necessarily going to the U). There are smaller scholarships(mostly from private endowments) that the school offers that are enough to pay for books, supplies etc. About 50% of the class had one of those.

That's not FBI. The folks who do that are plain clothes detectives of local municipalities.

If she was naked and had just waxed the car, then this is a totally legit question. Otherwise, I can see your wife's point.

Why does Medical School cost so much? Salaries of the professors?

That is part of it. Also I think cadavers and dissection labs cost quite a bit. So do simulation laboratories. And if a school wants good rotations sites then they have to be willing to pay for those too (unless they have their own affiliated hospital). Also a lot of our classes are taught by MDs and DOs that have an actual practice that they have to take time away from to come and teach us. That means the school has to pay them what their time is worth.

I assume that Nik would be looking at a position as an agent, which with his law degree, would probably lead him down a different path than SS protection details. I know law and accounting are the primary backgrounds the FBI looks for. 35 is the maximum age for a new recruit.

Crazy. I think the federal government should pay for med school (competitively) for the best candidates, in return for a few years of public service (a la the military).
Loan repayment and scholarships are already widely available if you commit to one of the following after medical school:

                        1. Rural medicine
                        2. NIH-funded research for a minimum of 24 months.
                        3. Military medicine

Those are still not very popular options -- most people would rather just suck it up and pay off their debt themselves.

Very true. I've tried a couple of time to talk my wife into letting me do the military thing. She won't go for it. If I was single I'd do it though.

                              Go for it!

My initial intention in going to law school was to try and get in the FBI. Growing up there were two fairly prominent FBI guys living in my neighborhood, and they both recommended that route. But when I didn't get into Utah or BYU, I kind of soured on the idea as I figured my loans were going to be too high to pay back on government salary.

If you want to do primary care or something like general or trauma surgery, I think the military is a great way to go.

Sometimes you hear stories about the military not letting people do residencies in things like anesthesia or radiology. So then you have to pay back your military years as a general practitioner after your intern year and then do your specialty residency. That would drag things out for a long time.
