  • OK, after my lengthy threadjack, let's get back to some Apps chat.

Here is what is getting lots of run on my device as of late:

    Reference
Zillow: we are on the hunt. It is a decent app, but not overly thrilled by it. Anyone using a good real estate app?

The Weather Channel: I held off for a long time because the negative reviews were loud and legion. I decided to try it anyway and I am glad I did. This is a nice looking free app. There are ads, but they are not intrusive. I think many of the complaints re: the ads were from iPhone users that did not have a large screen. I check this app a lot now. Has video, as well. Very solid.

    Music

Indie 103.1: great for streaming. LA based indie station.

TuneIn radio: much thanks to Jeff Lebowski for suggesting this one. It has become one of my faves. I stream it in the car wherever I go. I almost never use my CD player anymore. I think this app cost 99 cents??? It is worth way more than that. You can get stations from all over the country. I would dare say this is a "must have" app.

Virtuoso: free piano player app. Very fun app that has actually allowed my wife to give a piano lesson to the Puffy Check. You can also have two keyboards and play them head to head, which amounts to a noisemaker for the kids. But a fun free app.

    Sports

Ski Utah: free app that updates snow conditions at all the Utah resorts. Great for checking base and new snowfall within seconds. Con: formatted for iPhone.

    Games

Tunnel Shoot: I mentioned this before, but worth a second shout-out. Very cool and fun app that really takes advantage of the gyroscope-thing within the iPad.

Ragdoll Blaster 2 HD: for fans of these iPad physics games, the new Ragdoll Blaster is....well...a blast.

Toy Physics: along those lines, this is another one you will likely enjoy if you like the Ragdoll Blaster series.

NinJump: simple game that the little kids enjoy playing.

Pool Bar: my seedy little secret....play head to head billiards matches (nine ball and pockets) with all sorts of unsavory characters. Options allow you to make this as challenging or easy as you want. It looked like something I would play a couple of times and then toss but it has really sucked me in.

Can Knockdown: this is basically the new iteration of paper toss. And not as good, but it is free, so check it out for a change of pace.

Infinity Blade: fantastic RPG that has stunning visuals, featured in a recent iPad commercial, and made by Utah's own Chair Studios (sub of Epic Games) using the Unreal engine. The combat is fairly easy, but the graphics alone are worth the investment. The game is fun, too, so you are definitely getting your money's worth.

I'm looking at updating my note-taking app. Currently using neu.Notes. Thinking of switching to Penultimate (99 cents?). Anybody using penultimate that can vouch?

Also, does anyone use quicklytics, the google analytics app? The reviews are mixed but, again, it is 99 cents, so might be worth a spin.

Would love suggestions for any productivity or business apps that you have enjoyed.
    Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

    • App that most let me down in 2010: Gospel Library. This thing was a great idea and when it works it's fantastic. The problem is that it only works for me about 20% of the time. Not sure when they'll ever get it fixed but I hope they do. I don't want to have to go back to lugging real scriptures around.

Amen. That thing is probably the most buggy app I have and they have allegedly already fixed it once. When it works it is great, you are right.

The church has generally been unsuccessful in its first pass at technology. In all time worst implementations, i would rank this buggy app below the windows 95 MIS that the clerk still has to use but only slightly better than those now defunct temple recommend card swipers at the end of temple sessions.

Hmmm. I have had zero issues with Gospel Library on my Android. The only thing I wish it would have is a no time-out function while in the app. Currently I have my phone set to time-out and lock in 30 seconds of inactivity. There are plenty of times when I have Gospel Principles open and then some comments distract me and I look down and my phone is locked again.

I think it is completely hit and miss. In the app store, the negative reviews are universal....buggy app. The positive reviews often cite that despite the negative reviews, there have been no freeze issues.

Just browsed the reviews on Android Marketplace and they are a solid 5 stars. Few apps have that. Reading the comments of the two I saw that didn't give 5 stars one said they'd give 5 stars when the sheet music is included with the hymns. And the other said when they add Preach My Gospel they'll give 5 stars. I think it just may be iOS making it buggy.

                  • I have had Gospel Library for several months on my iPhone and only had one instance of it freezing up on me. I used to enjoy Yancey Reader on my PocketPC and Gospel Library is better--it has more features, easier to import new library items, and has a better interface. I think you guys that have had problems just aren't as in-tune as Surfah and me.

I just downloaded LDS Tools to my iPhone yesterday and so far like it a lot. I've got every phone number, address, and calling in my stake on my phone and it updates with a single click. Pretty cool.

I never even thought of this possibility, but it seems the most likely reason.

On Android I use Stake Central for MLS data. It's pretty rad and convenient.

I think what this really proves is that you don't read your scriptures. If you only open the app 3 times a year then one freeze up is still pretty bad.

Yeah, I read my scriptures off of my iPad and it freezes up about twice a week. And it freezes during lessons also. It's not just the scriptures. It is very frustrating.
